Re: The boards

I think this has now become a not very nice place to post. You don't seem to be able to behave like adults in a public place i.e. the internet.

Would you like to expand on which aspects you don't like Enrolled? All criticism is good. If you feel like that, then maybe other people do too. Is there anything you think could be done to make the place seem more friendly?

Enrolled,
sometimes there need to be heated arguments about the running of the board. The moderators have tried to have those discussions in a separate area but unfortunately we were all removed as moderators this morning and the separate area was deleted. We would rather not have these discussions like this either.

Hello well if it needs to be pointed out its is really far worse than you all think.

What was prevously seen to be debate appears to have descended in to a cat fight in a public place. You all need to identify what you want from this space and if this can be achieved fine and if not all this ' **** ' thats has replaced debate and fun postings needs to stop as it reflects on yourselves and puts people OFF.

Enrolled,

I understand that this looks unpleasant but part of the row is that it is not this that is putting people off. Under the previous regime, we have not had a new regular poster join for 11 months. The board has some serious issues compared to other succesful nursing and Runboard issues and the moderators have been trying to understand why and take it forward.

What is clear is that the way the board has been running is not attracting new members at all and that the active board membership has been shrinking steadily. The problem is also not more posting and if anything the level of posting has been far too high compared with much more succesful boards.

I hear what you're saying, Kitty, but with this board the way it is at the moment, with 7 moderators and 3 administrators, who would they actually be moderating?

I'm going to bring up the hoary old chestnut of increasing membership here. What can be done, do you think?

Clive,

I am totally with Kitty on this. There has just been a huge fight between many of the moderators (who are amongst the most active posters) about having a single dictator running the board themselves.

Moving from one dictatorship to another is not progress and I think you should seriously reconsider this. We have a situation where all the moderators were unilaterally removed by the previous owner and now we have the new owner who just wants to impose their own views on the board. That is the problem with dictatorships, in that moderators can be removed, whole sections deleted, the board altered and all on a personal whim.

If you want real progress on this, then I think you should embrace the opportunity of moving to democratically elected moderators and moderators which is what the moderators had agreed to prior to our sudden disbandment.

As I said, Dave, there is virtually nothing to moderate at the moment. Should that situation change, then I am more than willing to re-open a discussion about elected moderators and the like.

I would also like to point out that when I was sole moderator way back in the past, the moderation here was extremely light and, though I do say so myself, very fair and even-handed.

I know we've had our disagreements in the past, but I'd like to reassure you that that won't colour the way I moderate or administer this place.

In the meantime, I would really like us to stop what amounts to examining the contents of our navel buttons and think about how we can expand our membership to make this place the vibrant, lively site it used to be.

I'll be adding a link to this place to a psych nursing blog I contribute to. It's rather well-known in its own small way, so that might increase traffic.

Enrolled - what would you like to see on this board that would make it a better place to post?

Re: The boards

There are several issues as I see it and some could be personal.
The size of membership and the current regular posters is one issue. Particularly from an outsiders point of view it appears cliquey.
Some posters have to stop seeing this place as their personal soapbox for their own personal ends.
Manners, sadly lacking sometimes with attacks descending into the personal.
Focus, this place has no unique selling point to attract others, it arose out the ashes of the nt debarcle and I think that's where it stayed after an initial flurry. We are down to a die hard core, albeit small core,of members.
So do we increase the professional side of the debate,or make it more fun and quirky. There are loads of nursing/midwifery places for people to acces if we really want to encourage people to join and post I think it will take some effort from all members.

Re: The boards

And so the true colours emerge. Simpson has had the dictatorship given to him by the outgoing dictator and has no interest whatsoever in relinquishing any of his power. Glitter started that way to - only using moderation for "the good of the board" and then gradually the power started to be used to remove moderators, ban posters and delete posts she didn't like.

It is easy to describe this as "navel gazing" when what has really happened is Simpson has removed all the people who were moderating, deleted all the discussions criticising him and Glitter and has now set himself up as a self-appointed dictator.

The moderators had created a plan to move to having open democratic elections and moderators/administrators/owners and yesterday morning Simpson destroyed all of that. Rather than have moderators who are genuinely accountable to all of you, we now have a dictator who will "listen to suggestions".

I find it ironic that one of the biggest critics of absolute authoratarian rule here in the past is suddenly a huge advocate of it when he has the absolute authority?

Re: The boards

I think it's very sad that the forum has descended to this. Sadly I think this is possibly the forum's end.

I agree with happybunny's very astute post about what is wrong with the forum. She and Mad Jock were two very intelligent posters here, and if simpson took off his blinkers, he'd see that's exactly the sort of help he needs in moderators and would be urging them to put themselves forward.

I semi agree with Dave. I didn't think Glitter was dictatorial - she had mods, she allowed debate and she re-enstated a disbanded mod against her own wishes at the request of the other mods when we said we felt she'd made a mistake, so I think in all, most things were dealt with pretty fairly. Where I think she has made an enormous mistake is in quashing the debate about elections, disbanding the mods just like that and handing over contol of the board to one person only (and I would say that whoever was in sole control). If simpson is right about one thing it's that there isn't much to moderate at the moment. My original proposition was to have 3 mods elected. Dave then suggested 7, which I think is ambitious for now but a feasible long term goal if the forum should grow. Whatever the numbers, you SHOULD have mods. Nobody is completely objective, nor is anybody infallible, and we often needed another mod's voice to either say "good call" or "whoa, hold back!" None of us were perfect mods and you should remember simpson, that in your rose coloured glasses memories of, and I quote you:
"when I was sole moderator way back in the past, the moderation here was extremely light and, though I do say so myself, very fair and even-handed"
that included hurling personal insults at myself and uber, so no, I don't think the forum will be best run without mods to offer an alternative view to your own at times.

I personally can't be bothered any more. This is only the internet, not real life, so frankly, not worth giving yourself hassle over. I stated above I no longer wanted to moderate, but I was prepared to stick around and support a new panel of mods, whoever they may have been. But as Dave correctly states, the true colours emerge, hence I'd rather put my energies into other sites I'll get more out of, the French nurses site for example, very successful and one which we could have learned a lot from.

I genuinely wish the forum well and hope it grows and makes a success of itself, and yes simpson, though you may not believe it I even wish you well in running it, but I fear that if you call the shots single handedly in your own little fiefdom, you'll end up very lonely in here posting messages to yourself. I guess ironically the only winner in all this sorry mess is Mr. Hoppy!

Thanks for the laughs and the very interesting debates. This forum has been intersting and fun. Bye to those of you I liked and respected. You know who you are.
