Re: Appointments without pt records
It's important to get this development right to establish and maintain confidence in the system but I really would think they could achieve it quicker!

Re: Appointments without pt records
We still have paper notes, but also embryonic online system called Epex. It lists a patients demographics, prev. admissions, community contacts and with whom. It also lists any cautions. It wouldn't take much to extend this system, so that we could dispense with the paper notes as well.

Re: Appointments without pt records
We actually work in a "paper light" practice. It is great being able to access everything from GP's notes to lab results, without leaving my office.
Down side is when the system crashes and boy is that spectacular!!!
Or encouraging GP's to actually enter their notes, although two years on they seem to be getting the hang of it.

Re: Appointments without pt records
I'm no expert, really very limited knowledge about the new NHS records system but the reason it is taking so long is that it isn't just a matter of transferring what we do on paper to an electronic system , it's about a new system that will assist in all areas. So clinicians will need it for day to day record keeping, finding results viewing xrays and scans, ordering pharmacy, but other departments such as informatics want a data system that captures stats, and clinical coding want enough information collected to allow costing, pharmacy will want the system to do stock control and costing based on orders received. Plus a myriad of other things, so that's why it takes so long and is involving huge numbers of programmers.

I suspect that the "huge number of programmers" are not actually talking to each other and probably don't even know that the others exist.

Re: Appointments without pt records
That's very common with big jobs. Everyone does their bit without making sure it is compatible with everyone else's. Then you need a whole team to marry up the different programmes.

Which is exactly why the NHS is so crap at just about everything they try to organise...No joined up thinking!!!
Is it so difficult to co-ordinate things, its not rocket science!

Yes that does apply to the NHs, but I was referring to any large IT programmes. Private business has the same problems aswell.

Somehow I just can't imagine Alan Sugar setting up a new IT system without it being co-ordinated! Someone would be fired.
