As usual the Ranters have misread the topic and gone off on one.
This is all about STAFF regardless of grade or speciality who HAVE to travel AS PART OF THEIR WORK!!!
Now let me see.... how many bus drivers pay for the diesel they use????

Dave, yes I know my comments referred to own car users and lease car users get a reduced mileage rate but they do allegedly get other benefits from using the lease car for personal use.
I know many London trusts have a car pool for community staff and you get to your base and then use the trust transport for the days work, then go home under own steam. That seems to be a better alternative as far as I'm concerned anyway.

How many community nurses drive people around for a living?

I KNOW what the topic is about, but I do get tired of nurses moaning. So you have to pay a bit towards your transport - and? What next - the NHS should buy your car, your insurance, your road tax, your tires, your next service, your MOT, your parking etc etc.

Simpson are you for real?
Why should a community nurse pay for petrol to drive house to house for visits? That's like asking a hospital based nurse to pay the travel costs of each patient they see.
In the past I have done anywhere between 80 and 340 miles a month just driving from house to house doing visits.
Not only that but using my car in the course of my job means I have to have business insurance and so pay higher premiums, however that doesn't cover me to carry patients.
I'm not whinging I don't expect anyone to pay for my travel to and from work but I won't be subsiding the trust any time in the future.

Yeah I get the principle. It's the whining and the " oh we're so hard done by" complaining that gets on my tits. Nurses earn a decent wage these days. I don't hear any of them raising so much as a whimper about the rubbish deal their ancillary worker colleagues in the NHS get.

But also, presumably you use that car outside of work hours, yes? So presumably not all your petrol costs are work-related, yes? And if they pay for all your petrol, why not the car itself? Hell, why should any nurse pay for the shoe leather she uses?

I don't think you get it at all, Simpson. The argument is about staff who NEED TO DRIVE in order to carry out their duties, subsidisiing the NHS. They are only asking to be reimbursed, at a fair rate, for the petrol they use whilst at work. I for instance will only use a crown car as the NHS pays for all of that but I have to get the bus home. Seems like a reasonable deal to me. However my own trust for instance is UNABLE to provide crown cars for everyone and therefore RELY on staff providing their own cars.
Hope you manage to understand it now!

I think that is the way to go. turn up, pick up an NHS car, they pay for the fuel, insurance etc. and you drop it back at the end of the day. problem solved.

Presumably you have no qualms about buying all of the books, needed by your students, for them then Simpson, as you seem to think that nurses should pay to be able to do the jobs that they are employed to do for others benefit.

You don't do logic, do you Barry?

Neither, would it seem, do you.
Nurse makes note of mileage reading then nurse uses car to travel from health centre/GP's surgery/day hospital to visit patient in their home and then drives to see another patient in their home and then drives to see another...... then returns to workplace starting point and takes another mileage reading.
Subtract 1st reading from second and result equals mileage used whilst doing community nursing job. That number is submitted with details of visits on mileage claim.

Noone claims for journeys to and from home unless called out in an emergency situation e.g. community midwives attending BBA.
Now do you understand?
