Madeleine McCann before Shrek

AN advert about the missing girl is ebing shown before screeings of Shrek is this the right way to go about things?

The times has reported on this today and on my other forum there is a furious debate. I would ask is this the right place to show such an advert and who is it aimed at?

If the child was recently lost and is local to the cinema showing the advert then there might be benefits, but not in this case, if madeleine turns up it's not going to be in this country.

I don't quite understand the type of publicity we have had around this case and by whom it was generated, it has been almost like a runaway train with all types of people/celebrities jumping on board.

If this was my child, I would be moving heaven and earth to keep this in the public mind and eye. I agree that I don't think she will turn up in this country and there is a lot more publicity around this case than many others of missing persons but I don't see what the problem is. I would really do whatever I felt I needed to do.

I guess the problem is the context oaktree. IS it the right place or time before a U rated film? Kids see it and it says she was snatched from her room in the night. These kids are young and impressionable and should they ahve to sit through this advert?

I don't think it's right.

There are plenty of mediums in which to raise awareness of this issue.

Children go to the cinema to have fun and enjoy themselves, not to be scared and end up going home having nightmares about being snatched in the night !

Fair comment Glitter as I haven't actually seen the advert I should be wary of commenting. The fact that its been all over the news though probably means lots of children are already aware of what's happened. In our house it proved a good opportunity to talk about things like this as our little girl asked lots of questions.

I agree oaktree, kids ask questions and know about the case. I think here it really is was this the right time and place?

I cannot blame the McCanns in any way for wanting to keep the whole thing in the media glare but I do worry about the effect of some of the publicity on small children and their view of how safe it is to go to bed at night for example.

Young minds work in funny ways...when my daughter was little we had our car stolen from a carpark while out shopping. We found her sobbing in bed later that night...why ...because she thought because the car had gone they would know where we lived and come and find us....

Shrek (U)does seem a bad film to put the cause infront of...because some parents do let their children view films without grown ups and no one would be there to explain/support

I'm still wondering what has made this case so different from all the rest with regards to the type of publicity going on, who's generating it, what's with the celebrity invovlvement, would it be happening if the child had been snached from it's bed on a council estate while the parents were in a pub right next doors checking on the child every 10 mins I think not, I also think the parents would come in for quite a bit of critism for their irresponsible behaviour - and rightly so.

You are absolutely right snowkitty.

I think this is two middle class "nice" "professional" parents and had it been the scenario you suggest they would have been crucified.
