Why are kids so homophobic and racist and why are they allowed to get away with it?

Bit of a rant here but I am so sick of my son getting called gay boy, fairy and ballet boy. He is fairly tolerant but all my kids complain that the term gay is used as the worst kind of bullying at school constantly.

The other day I was taking kids in my car and one of them started laughing when Mikas song came on about a man loving a man. I said if they didnt stop I would stop the car and they could walk. This child has also complained to her mum that my family is all gay as we talk about lesbians and things so much openly (she was on in the car when I was talking to a friend about a lesbian wedding she was going and what to wear). Her mum laughed it off but I said she should maybe speak to her daughter as I was sick of it.

It doesn't stop there in schools the racism and name calling is unbelievable and I wonder if any of the campaigns for rights and freedoms of others have paid off.

Narrow minded bigots is what education is churning out in this country.

I think there are a few issues here, I'd generalise and say kids of a certain age want to fit in so anything 'different' is seen as not part of their life add to that peer group pressure and differences are amplified and treated with derision.
As much as I hate the use of the phrase "that's so gay" I really think kids are using it without thinking of the real implications of the words, challenge them about being homophobic and they don't make that connection.
So why do they get away with it? Because their parents don't think it's important enough? Because their parents don't care? Because the parents really are homphobic and racist?

Amazingly it happened again last night on another car ride and I hit the roof. They were talking about a boy from school with yet another child and she said "oh yeh well he's a pouf". When I challenged it they said yes, but he is, he wore a pink waistcoat into school on a wear your own clothes day!

I think that's so gay is very different hb and some of the things they learn off Will and grace I dont mind it is the name calling in a slightly vindictive way and the use of terminology to put people down that gets on my nerves.

The conversation deteriorated into jews after that anyway when I once again said if you continue you will get out and walk.

Homophobia and anti-semitism are pretty much acceptable hatreds these days.

They've been made so thanks to a) self-loathing white liberals who have created a hierarchy of hate wherein racism and especially "Islamaphobia" tops the charts and anything else is of lesser or even negligible importance and b) the irrational hatred of (yes I'm going to say it) Israel that permeates public debate these days.

This is why they aren't tackled in schools. I imagine that some teachers are afraid to confront homophobia for fear of being labelled themselves or of offending this or that "community". Pretty much the same applies to anti-semitism

The very notion of "community" makes me want to throw up. Things are getting worse and worse IMO, with "communities" all fenced off from each other, virtual self-imposed segregation in some of our cities and towns and nothing but nothing being done to counteract this. In fact, quite the opposite, with this govt promoting ludicrous "faith schools" that promote sectarianism. They babble on about "community cohesion" while continuing to think of "communities" as these discrete, sectioned off groups of people, all with their "community leaders".

Gay people have done very poorly at positioning themselves in this brave new world. I blame gay people themselves for some of this as well. We used to be politicised but now it seems we're happy to conform to stereotypes of hedonistic, superficial disco bunnies. We've ****ed ourselves over, and this is the reward.

Thank god for people like Stonewall and Outrage.

I agree with much of this Simpson but some of it is outright racism. Recently one of my kids complained that on a school trip she had encountered kids from a previous school 98% muslim. The kids in her new white school called them chocolate brownies and pakis! She was appalled.

The Jew thing also came up last night as part of a discussion on Islam interestingly enough.

I do blame the parents in many ways. My kids do make a point of standing up to some of it but sometimes it is not their job and sometimes it is too wearing. My son is having a party on Friday and has already told his friends that I wont tolerate homophobic comments or racism.

I agree about teachers being labelled as well Simpson .

I agree 100%.
Gay Pride used to a political event - fun, but with a very serious purpose. Now it's just a party. While I don't mind celebrating what's good about being gay, we mustn't forget that we are a long way away from full acceptance and a homomphobia free society.

The gay press used to be factual, campaigning and hard hitting. Now it's just "Hi boyz, summer's coming, ready for a hot **** on the beach?" I despair.

Moi aussi mon cher. I think today's generation of queers think all the battles have been won so it's PARTY TIME! But as I always say, don't take it for granted. Inter-war Berlin was also a free and easy kind of a place and we all know how THAT ended up!

I think the younger generation use the term 'gay' to mean naff.

I agree that homophobic based bullying is now acceptable in schools, whilst racism is jumped on.

It's not alright to call someone a paki, but faggot is apparently.

Not just now, it always has been. While we may have gone some way to eliminating racism, the same efforts have not been made as regards homophobia, essentially because of widespread homophobia amongst teachers themselves, and institutionalised homophobia in certain places like church schools.

Racism isnt really pounced on either though. There is much talk about it but very little action.

As for church schools (spit spew) I was chair of governors in one when we looked at the sex education policy and there was a clause in there which said we needed to forgive homosexuals but to tell the kids it was a sin! I took it out of the policy.
