My feelings exactly, having been unfortunate enough to go to one where teachers openly mocked gays and the RE teacher obsessively ranted against "bent" people, their "mis-use" of sex and their just desserts in hell. I found out years later that one of our teachers is gay. What a working environment for him!! And here is the double edge sword: whilst on the one hand his being out could have helped people like me, on the other his life would have been hell and at a Catholic school in the 70's (and possible still today) some feeble excuse would have been found to get rid of him.
Incidentally, our biology teacher used to make jokes about blacks all being bus conductors, and make comments about "too many foreigners"

The glories of the Church and organised religion!
Tolerance is not a virtue of Christianity.

I thought that shagging the choirboys was a perk of the job.
You mean taking advantage of young boys who can't say no, i.e. rape, then criticising loving, concensual homosexual relationships from the pulpit or in the classroom.

The church is not tolerant though Simpson (and by that I mean the broad Christian church).

Depends what church you mean, Glitter. The Roman Catholic Church is actually a lot more tolerant than it's given credit for - yes, there's all that gubbins about homosexual sex being a sin, but the Pope has clearly and unequivocally stated that homosexuals should not be persecuted or discriminated against. The Anglican Church takes a similar view - "love the sinner, hate the sin". However, more liberal Christian denominations are marrying gay people, appointing openly gay clergy, celebrating gay relationships and preaching tolerance, compassion, freedom and equality.
If you want real intolerance, look no further than Islamic theocracies, where gay people are hanged for being gay or hounded into having mutilating surgery.

Anybody who considers my loving, 20 year old relationship a "sin" does not view me as equal on the same level as heterosexuals. Such discrimination is far from tolerant, it's insulting and offensive, and I don't buy their insincere claptrap about "loving" me when I'm really nothing more than a potential candidate for conversion in their eyes.

But they don't really love you simpson. Get real. You're a "sinner" and if they can reform you it's brownie points for them. They love you as much as they love other "sinners", rapists and murderers for example. I am not in that category and I take offence at being classified as such. I'm not interested in a hierarchy of bigotry - it's all hatred and I detest it all whether it comes from muslims, catholics, rastas or sun worshippers.
