Re: Why are kids so homophobic and racist and why are they allowed to get away with it?
I would say it is impossible to truly believe in the words of Jesus and not be a hypocrite in some way or other.
I have a great deal of time for his teachings but not all of them are possible all of the time and so it makes hypocrites of anyone attempting to follow his guidance.
That is not necessarily a bad thing Simpson because striving to be good is so much better than accepting we are all bad. The hopefulness that there is redemption for humanity is something which is deeply attractive about religion. It is the various prices which have to paid for redemption and when it takes place which I have a problem with.

I am finding it hard to work out why religion is being blamed for children's bad behaviour/poor attitudes. The majority of people (including children) I know claim not to follow any religion. In this case how are religions putting forward their views to these people. I do not see TV adverts telling children to go out and be racist or any other form of bullying. So where are children learning it? How can they be learning it from religious groups?

Chestnut no one is blaming religion we have discussed the attitude of religions though to gay people and those with different beliefs.

Interesting debate, however it isn't religious teachings in them selves that create issues, but the human beings that interpret and follow the various religious teachings it appears to me that an individual comes up with a philosophy to live a better way of life and then others come along and start to see a way of gaining control through the new teachings, most religious teaching end up being interpreted by men in an effort to control society.
Take out the religious part of this debate and your left with the bare bones of it which is that human beings, in general will have issues with others who do not belong to the same group as they do, fundamentally as we evolved there probably were good reasons for this, but we are still a young and emerging group in planetry terms, I think we have evolved quickly in terms of society and social interactions, but behaviorally, well, we may have poked our heads out of the cave but we haven't exactly moved very far away from it.
I think our evolvement into truly social beings has a little way to go just yet, in the mean time it's about parents teaching their children that differences don't have to be threatening.

Tribalism isn't necessarily just about culture it's about groups based on similarities, and where an individual feels they belong, and where an individual feels socially comfortable, tribalism may well be supported by social constructs, but fundamentally these arose out of a natural need to be with 'our own', and no matter how we cross the divides and dip in and out of others cultures, fundamentally the drive to 'belong' is very strong, that is why even cities that have strong cultural diversities, people still group together in certain areas, china town, jewish quater ect
