Tibet, China and the Olympics

What are your thoughts on what's going on? Should we boycott the Olympic games, or at least the opening ceremony? Should China pull out of Tibet? Should a religious leader be installed as political leader of an independent Tibet? What should happen n your view?

All of the above. Chinas treatment of Tibet is scandalous and bordering on genocide. I doubt very much if western influence carries much weight in China but it will at least embarass them and show some solidarity to Tibet. The Dalai Lama is possibly the most peaceful human being on this planet.

I don't dee how boycotting sport will do anything. Economic sanctions, a refusal to buy their stuff or export goods is far more effective.

That too, Kitty. We need to boycott the lot. It worked against South Africa!

I would never be in favour of a religious leader for a state though no matter how wonderful they are.

Phew! I thought I was going to be a loner on this one.

There is a potentially big demgraphic problem ahead if Tibet achieves independence, and that is that untold numbers of Han Chinese, amongst others have been herded into the area, and now, many having been born there, regard Tibet as home. Just as an independent Ukraine has had to deal with an eastern half of the country now popultaed by Russian speakers of a different religion, just as Kossova has adapted according to it's new majority population, Tibetans are going to have to accept that even if they wrench free of China, the "newcomers" ain't going home and if you demand rights for one, you demand rights for all. Free elections for Tibet, yes. If the Dalai lama wants to put himself forward as a political leader of a secular political party, independent from his religious function, fine, but I don't believe all the inhabitants of Tibet should have a religious state thrust upon them any more than I agree with the current Chinese involvement in the region. What kind of democracy and freedom of thought when we see children made monks? And really, Dalai Lama, experience of managing an economy and surviving the cut throat world of political leaders? Nice old man, but........ Peaceful or not, religion as government is dangerous. Free Tibet, free elections!

As for the Olympics I really couldn't give a toss. Boycotting the opening ceremony might be a gesture worth considering, but let the poor sods who've trained and dreamed of this for 4 years go and compete and have their moment.

I couldnt give a toss about the Olympics and agree with Kitty about economic sanctions.

Free elections though and no religious rule. Agree with Kylie that there will be real problems with the Chinese anyway.

Where do I go to get my free Tibet? Do I need a voucher?

But seriously, folks, the Tibetans are treated appallingly by the Chinese and I'd be all in favour of a boycott.

As for the Dalai Lama, he's a political figure as much as a religious one, so I see no problem if the Tibetans want him to be in charge.

Tibet belongs to the Tibetans not the Chinese, who have actively worked at undermining and diluting Tibetan culture, whilst at the same time have not put any great social improvements in place.

Sanctions don't really help sway a corrupt government, but they have great impact of small individuals struggling to make a day to day living.

If this country wants to influence the Chinese government then they need to take a look at the top end of the economic market maybe starting with the arms trade.

Bottom line is that China with it's appalling human rights issues shouldn't have even been in the running for the olympics let alone being awarded them.

There is the argument around keeping dialog with the Chinese open, but in order to influence them for the better we have to have something that they want that we are in a position to bargain with and possibly withhold but I am not sure what that could be.

No boycotting the Olympics won't make any differences, after all China was kept out of international sport for decades by choice, and the prevention of South Africa playing sport had no effect either.

The Olympic committee should not have awarded China the Games in the first place, they must have realised the political outcome of the decision, but then again what do you expect from a mulitnational body where every country has its own agenda.
