Re: prison nurse interview OMG

When you ask for feedback, ask if you were "above the line". That means that you were appointable but that there were better candidates. If you were "below the line" then ask which areas you need to develop.

I'm sorry you didn't get the post, but as I said if there is any chance of your being the only nurse on duty the prison will normally expect to employ experienced nurses, hence the A/E, MAU nurses being there, and probably some nurses with psyche experience as well. You may need to get some experience in one of those areas, before you get a chance to work in a prison.

When I started the minimum acceptable level and experience was 2 years at "E " grade, plus bringing a care speciality to the area.

Sometimes you can be there just to make up the numbers and that is why being "above the line" is so important. Generally what happens is that all the applicants are sifted into "good", "average" and "poor". Then depending on how many people can be interviewed (based on timings and panel size), the good and average applicants are selected for interview.

During the interview, applicants are judged to be "above the line" (i.e. appointable) or "below the line" (i.e. not appointable). Then the panel choose from the appointable candidates and this can be based on very subtle differences and sometimes even who they think they will get on best with.

The Prison service usually have a panel to sift the applications at a prison other than the one where the post is going to be, who set the parameters, and given the amount of applications they get for each post to get an interview meant that you had a good chance of getting the job if you were shortlisted.

The sift panel is usually the Governor who is nominally in overall charge of the hospital area, a security Principle Officer, the Head of Health Care, and for someone from the local PCT. You must have got something right in your application otherwise you wouldn't be there, they never ask people to interview just to make up the numbers.

It could just be that they offered the job to someone who either had more experience to bring to the arena, or that they just interviewed better than you, so don't get disheartened.

Re: prison nurse interview OMG

In my experience the prison service is usually prepared to interview as many as pass the initial sift, which you clearly did, however from then on in it becomes comparative, if every one was newly qualified then you may have stood a better chance but if you were up against experienced nurses it would have been a little harder for you, and if you where up against other experienced prison nurses then again they would stand a much better chance of being appointed than you, experience is what most healthcares are looking for becuase of the level of responsibility you will be expected to take on.

One of the issues you need to understand is that the nature of prison work is such that you really do need to have some nursing experience under you belt as a lot of the time you are expected to work alone making judgements and decisions across disciplines, often at night you will be the only qualified member of staff on duty, so experience becomes essential, some of the larger healthcares have enough staff to offer preceptorships and supervision to newly qualified staff, but these are few and far between.

Don't give up, consolidate your practice, and keep in touch with the jails closest to you that you would like to work in eventually.
