Reassessment also assures your employer that you remain competant and have taken on board any new initiatives.
I know how to do CPR but my mandatory update annualy also assesses I'm competant to perform CPR,I don't have a problem with that

me neither but i think my aseptic technique whilst warranting an update does not warrant a formal assessment after its something ive done on a daily basis even CPR updates dont involve formal assessments...

It's the same old story, we tell the world we are professional and competent, then in the next breath tell the world that we can't be trusted.

Re: courses

I don't see a problem with having competence reassessed. I know that it only demonstrates competence at that particular point in time and there are many issues already debated over the actual assessment of competence but just because I was competent at something 20 years ago doesn't mean I still am. One of the big problems is keeping up with all the competence assessments and there has to be some prioritisation. If you turn it round to the view of a patient then wouldn't you prefer to see nurses who can demonstrate updated competence rather than nurses just carrying on in their own sweet way doing something in the same manner for years that isn't necessarily the right way?

So are yu saying that we should walk around with a badge saying that I have updated my competencies so that the patient can see that you have spent an hour getting bored to tears by someeone telling you what you already know, or as the case in a loty of these updates, out of date material.

If the material is out of date, then it's hardly an update.

Perhaps they should.

We have enormous rates of HAIs in the UK. More people die from HAIs than die from car accidents. That's thousands and thousands of devastated families: kids without mothers, husbands without wives, people's partners and sons and daughters and grandparents and friends all prematurely snatched away. I really don't give a toss if some nurses get a wittwe bit upset about being assessed on their handwashing. If that's what it takes to help reduce these totally unacceptable figures, then it has to be done and nurses should stop moaning about it.

I'm with simpson on this but in response to Uber - I wasn't suggesting wearing badges but maybe we could get given little patches along with our certificates that we can sew on our uniforms, kind of like I remember getting when I was in the Brownies..... emoticon

Why not get a medal, you could fill your chest with them. People didn't get HAI's to the extent they do now when nurses didn't get updates or have someone with a degree watch them wash their hands, so it would appear that the updates don't actually have any positive effect on the standards of nursing care. There are many reasons for the increase, and not having interminable updates isn't one of them.
