I doubt if it is a joke.

Actually I seem to remember some research that was done into spitting on cuts, that found that it had an anti bacterial reaction.

I did my degree thesis on this very subject!. There is an extensive evidence base for some types of wounds and mainly anecdotal evidence (albeit extensive over many years) for other types of wounds.
Goalie - there is actually a large evidence base for the use of tap water in surgical wounds (provided the edges of wounds have begun healing and the water is from an uncontaminated source!). It is way better (for soooo many reasons) than most of the expensive wastes of time and money that are used widely in the nhs!!! - I have my thesis somewhere if anyone needs the evidence base I used (or wants a read! lol). It was predominantly chronic wound based but also covered acute and surgical wounds!.
Why is it so hard to get nurses to give up the steripods!!!!! and why do they continue to use COLD fluids to clean wounds (also why do they feel so compelled to wash every wound they see - whether they need it or not!!!!).
Ah the joys............. emoticon

What's the point in all this screaming - no-one's listening anyway!!!

I have to go to the local uni next week for a post grad wound care for mental health nurses thingy, it is going to be so bloody funny. Sort of 'gather round ladies and gentleman.' 'what's that?' 'well nurse Kitty, we call that a leg,' ' oh, I don't know....... don't see many of those in psychy, are you sure?' Someone's going to die aren't they? I'm not fit to be let near physically ill people.

hi I had read about using tap water on surgical wounds only a couple of weeks ago. Would be very interested in reading your evidence base if thats poss. I do use steripods in some circumstances..in the community you never know what the water supply is going to be like. Also steripods fit neatly in my pocket so are body temp when i need to use them.

have fun! and see it as an oportunity to provide holistic care. I know a few mental health nurses who have developed their wound care skills. Mentally ill patients still get pressure sores and leg ulcers, and that includes IV drug users as well as the elderly. As a community nurse i have been into mental health units to assist managing complex wounds. When the mental health services split from the primary care trust in your area, that wont happen.I would love the opportunity to have some basic training inmental health assessment. Many of my patients with chronic wounds also have mental health problems.

I suspect that is one of the reasons we are being sent.

Kathiemac great reply and it is always good when the students show us all up for being out of date and old fashioned. <Glitter wanders off in search of egg whites>

Dont worry glitter.. i expect egg white will have its turn again. I encourage my patients to have an egg or two to increase their protein intake and promote healing ( to eat rather than apply to the wounds as we used to do!). unfortunately everyone is too frightened to go near an egg in case they get bird flu. emoticon
