Reflections on the last 2 days

This post is intended to be a genuine reflection and a stimulus for debate on what has happened and the way forward. It is not meant as a personal attack on any individuals or an attempt to dredge the previous history.

One of the most puzzling things over the last 48 hours is why Glitter chose to give the board to Simpson.

For us former moderators, this seemed like a very peculiar decision. We have been privy to the many discussions where Glitter argued that Simpson should be permanently banned and on no account should ever be made a moderator. Even when it was argued that as one of the top posters, Simpson had as much right to be a moderator as any of us, Glitter fought against this suggestion.

So why on Tuesday, did she give absolute control over the board to Simpson?

Could it be that because amongst the former moderators, we agreed that ownership should only be temporary until we could establish a democratically elected accountable structure? Was Simpson quite literally the only person who would keep the board under a single person's control? Even though Glitter appeared to strongly dislike Simpson's behaviour in private, was he the only person who had enough of an authoritarian streak to refuse all movement towards genuinely accountable ownership and moderation?

What is certain is that the decision was never even discussed among any of the moderators who have worked hard over the years to develop the forum and the events of Tuesday came as much of a shock to us as it did to you. What is also clear is that in the 24 hours since Glitter's departure (although she still appears to be a forum administrator), Simpson has taken control over the forum and is busy redesigning the forum's look, content and structure all with no apparent involvement or discussion with anyone.

A real cynic might suggest that perhaps this was one final act to end the forum once and for all? A real cynic might hypothesise that Glitter believed that Simpson would cause such controversy and cause such damage that the board would simply implode and she would be shown to have been right all along.

Dave - if I wanted to finish this board, I could just close it down and that would be the end of it. Please - instead of raking this over and over and over and in the process, slagging off Glitter and myself, can you move on and start posting on something to do with nursing or healthcare or current affairs.

Zimbabwe is probably on the brink of civil war. Scientists have started creating hybrid embryos. The House of Lords has issued a report saying that immigration brings no economic benefit to Britain. There are far more important and interesting things than the moderation of one tiny little pack of pixels in among the billions of gigabytes of information on the world wide web.

If we woke up tomorrow and a military Junta had taken over our government and had imposed martial law, they would be saying exactly the same thing. "Stop raking over the past", "it isn't important", "there are other things to focus on", etc. Only a handful of people would protest and they would be dismissed as troublemakers by the new regime.

The reality is that there has been a coup on this board, that criticism of the new regime is being restricted you are just telling everyone to "get over it and focus on something else".

And you remain a staunch europhile Dave.

Uber, I know you don't believe this but not everyone you disagree with is a Europhile. Will you stop bandying the word around as a general insult? It has a specific meaning - someone who supports the idea of European unification (mainly through the European Union (EU)) and generally supports further 'deepening' of European integration, specifically in the context of political argument over the current and future status of the EU and its policies.

I have never posted anything along those lines.

It means much more than that, because you failed to mention that people who object to eurosceptics telling the truth are by association europhiles.

She decided that for personal reasons she would be unable to continue.
