Student nurse drop out rate high

Story here: -

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7337259.stm

More than a quarter of the UK's student nurses dropped out of their courses in 2006, figures suggest.

Data obtained by Nursing Standard magazine under the Freedom of Information Act showed some courses had a drop-out rate as high as 56%.

Of a total of 25,101 students who started degrees or diplomas, 6,603 dropped out before the end, costing an estimated £98m.

So what's that all about, do we think?

There has always been a drop out figure, but how it relates is hartd to say as there are less training places for nurses now than prior to the migration to the Uni's. It does seem to be very high though. Is there any evidentiary cause for this level of leavers.

I could hazzard a guess that once they get to Uni and see how hard they have to work and no long holidays, they p*ss off and get a degree that will get them decent job. emoticon

I may well of heard it at my interview day...but I think it was said that if you didn't have any health care experience, you were strongly advised to go out and get some before deciding to take up such a committment as a diploma or degree. Not a bad idea really if you ask me - how can you know you are going to want to pursue such a career if you have no experience of doing it?? Seems silly to plough all your energy into a 3 year course, only to realise it's not want you want to do in the end.

However, I guess there will always be some who naively think it's an easy job with long holidays...a little research into what you would like to consider as a career doesn't go astray either (anyone making a choice such as this would be a bit silly not to look into it first!)

The strange thing was when I went for my nursing interview, they rejected one candidate who had worked as a care assistant for 3 months because she didn't have enough experience and took me on when I had never set foot in a clinical area in any staff capacity ever.

That is very odd Dave! Sounds like the other candidate wasn't very impressive perhaps...??

I don't personally really have an issue with people who have never had experience starting a nursing course (no one can really judge that except for the person themselves!)

My reasoning is that I didn't know that I didn't want to work in retail until I tried it... I didn't know I didn't want to work in an office until I tried that...

It has taken me five years to decide what I want to study at Uni, as I didn't want to pick any old course then find out it wasn't want I wanted to make a career out of!

:-D

That is a good strategy Jemma although it is quite easy to move from one degree program to another. During my first degree, several people on our course changed degrees between the first year and the second year and even in nursing, you see people moving from child to adult or adult to mental health.

Indeed, I know of at least one person in our intake this year that has switched degrees onto the nursing!
Everyone is of course different, I am just one of those peeps that likes to make up their mind on something firmly and 100% before deciding to embark on it....but good on those who take the brave decision to switch subjects completely too...as long as they know what they are getting in to, hehehe.

Maybe that was the reason she preffered to use...or maybe she didnt take on board the positive things about working as a care assistant to her interview....I know of one student who prefers to say that they didnt finish training because face didnt fit...thing was they were never in lectures and didnt submit own work for assignments preferring to take shortcuts which found them out and used to brag about it!!!...now prefers to let on to trained staff they know as much as trained staff rather than concentrating on own duties as care assistant on return to work on another ward area.

Maybe if they received more money instead of having to work on top of their full time course, more people would stay.
