so ...we continue to roll our sleeves up, take control when management not on premises and not contactable out of hours and do hands on work ...because we love what we do and money isnt an issue...i came to do this job because it is what i wanted to do...but the boundaries have changed and responsibilities have been handed down whilst pay does not reflect the level of responsibility or ongoing work done in own time to meet KSF requirements and update self...but i do it because i want to continue working in the job i always wanted to do...

I agree with you entirely but there also comes a point when this just becomes abuse of staff. Management can treat us like sh*te because they know they will get away with it and that we will never let the patients down come what may! This IMHO is not the way to run a "caring" so called proffesion.

Healthcare isn't alone in it's abuse of staff goodwill, I was talking to my brother in law at the weekend and he does as much unpaid overtime in the food technology business. He says he does it because it's expected and if he doesn't do that they will find a convenient way to replace him. No guilt just good old profit margins come into play there.

Some variation of this has been said at one time or another by nurses down the decades. Nothing's changed though. Nurses, it would seem, prefer moaning to action.

And the solution is?

What it's always been, jock - for nurses to present more of a united professional front. But that is way easier said than done, with nurses constantly at each others' throats in such an unseemly way - RGNs slagging off RMNs, RMNs slagging off RGNs, staff nurses versus ward managers, everyone having a pop at lecturers and researchers, tall poppies being mercilessly cut down, students being treated like **** etc etc etc. No wonder nobody in power takes us seriously.

Simpson...re those slagging others off have you noted that those who have done the job peviously...whether upwards or downwards...dont slag others off but are more able to appreciate the pressures others are subjected to...and if we can talk to folk instead of ranting we do get our say...and this aids mutual respect and a better morale in spite of the bad bits..as for students treated like s***...tat is more to do with individual personalities than anything els...there are good and bad students like staff...good l;ecturers understand the void between theory and practice and can work amicably between if they want to...oh and by the way simpson how would you get people to take you seriously... emoticon

No, I haven't noticed that. In fact, quite the opposite. Some nurses, once they get to a certain level, seem to forget all about the pressures they once worked under.

Which folk are you thinking of here?

quote:

and this aids mutual respect and a better morale in spite of the bad bits..

I think there is very little mutual respect between nurses, to be honest.

as for students treated like s***...tat is more to do with individual personalities than anything els...

Couldn't disagree more. There seem to be some nurses who have made it their bounden duty to make the lives of students as difficult as possible. I think you're indulging in victim-blaming here.

there are good and bad students like staff...

Of course, but that doesn't excuse the bullying of students that I have seen go on.

quote:

good l;ecturers understand the void between theory and practice and can work amicably between if they want to...

I don't think there should be such a void between theory and practice, if theory is based on solid evidence.

oh and by the way simpson how would you get people to take you seriously... emoticon

Why have you personalised this?

Re: Student nurse drop out rate high

well...IMO those of us who step back down the ranks apreciate the pressures of those higher up where they once were .

Yes...there will always be those who do forget their roots but not in all cases and just as there are always bullies to be found so it is important to stand up for those being bullied and be prepared to be counted..it has happened in our workplace and we have singled the bully out!!!...just as mutual respect beteween the ranks does exist ... one can never generalise as every situation is different and yes i appreciate that bullying does happen as does instances of nil respect...
As for being personal..i wasnt intentionally so... it was just a jokey comment which is why i used an echer..if it was meant otherwise I would not have used an esher but i forgot you dont seem to have a sense of humour... just a chip on your shoulder..unless you re berating someone else and then the fact that its personal doesnt seem to matter then..so cheer up emoticon
