Some wine stuff

In a very delayed reply to Bong about wine in another thread, I decided to start a wine thread in time for the Thanksgiving gorging period.

First, I will self-promote a good deal on a case of rose. Yes, pink wine. Real roses are not meant to be sweet, but actually dry wines. I believe roses are great for Thanksgiving because they're light, fruity, crisp and go well with a variety of foods. Also, besides bubbly, it's one wine you can drink in the morning without passing out by lunch. $14/bottle

Recommend: 2006 Donati Family Vineyard Rosato Estivo, buy a case, get free shipping in CA, AZ, and NV. link

Next, in good and affordable reds I found some gems.

05 Hedges CMS (Cab, Merlot, Syrah). Washington wines are well-known in the Pacific northwest, but a relative underdog elsewhere. Sure, there are plenty of expensive WA cabs, but there's also lots of value-driven WA wines...especially Bordeaux varieties. This blend is a nice balance of fruit and power at a price that screams buy more than one, $11.

04/05 La Planta Ribera Del Duero, Spain. 100% Tempranillo grape, it is more new world in style (big fruit, soft tannins). It also fits in the category of "I put some thought into my selection" and scoring points with the possible family wine snob. Shut that annoying facker up by upstaging his $50 bottle of Wine Specator/Parker 90-pointer with your well thought out $12 Spanish stunner.

05 Casa Lapostolle Cuvee Alexandra Cabernet Sauvignon. If my memory serves correct, this wine is a blend of at least 3 Bordeaux varieties. Negative points for being an undercard in a corporate, lackey-filled conglomerate. Bonus points for spending their money on French Oak barrels. This wine will also be a Gardner-Webb spoiler to your aforementioned wine snob's Kentucky. $16

Finally, another southern hemisphere sweet deal from Argentina. Bonus points for electing an aging Cougar , Argentina also gets kudos for making Malbec drinkable. The 06 (don't fear the vintage, they're a season ahead of us) Crios de Susanna Balbo Malbec is the weapon of choice this Thanksgiving. Big, yet soft, the dark fruit also has hints of mint and earthiness that will be a great foil to turkey, ham, roast beef and salmon. If you're a vegetarian, fack you. $13

Re: Some wine stuff

Good stuff, Lionel.

Another '06 Malbec that has been suprising available and affordable is the Alamos Malbec (also from Argentina). Retails for around $12, but it has become a suprisingly popular house red for some restaruants. Fork in San Anselmo sells in by the glass. I believe BevMo started carrying it this year.

I love Syrah with Thanksgiving dinner especially when using lots of fresh sweet squash like delicata and butternut. The clove and currant hints go great with a nice turkey-day spread. I picked up a case of Plumpjack '04 Syrah when I worked for them. Man, it's facking tasty. It's a pricey bottle, goes for about $40 retail. But you can purchase it at the Plumpjack wine store on Filmore in teh Marina, so you can get your cougar fix while buying it.

Another wine that I like with November food is a nice Reisling. I know it kinda goes against conventional wisdom, but there are so many hidden sweet notes in fall food that Reisling can help bring them out. Not a super citrusy or sugar-foward variety, but one that invokes apples and honey. Speaking of the hidden Washington wines, I spent a weekend in Walla Walla back in July and got to do some tasting out there. They are doing lots of Reisling and Gerzitraminer (sp?) along the columbia valley. Three Rivesr Winery has an '06 Riesling that fits the bill for pork and apples or cranberreies with turkey and brussels sprouts.

Maybe I'll post some recipes for to eat with these wines?

Any HFs that make the trip to Templeton for our hooch is most welcome. Hit me with a PM and I'll see to it you're taken care of in a not-so-Sopranos way.

Thanks for the feedback LM.

I can always count on you to help me branch out a bit and give me some nice South American & Spanish wines to add to the rotation, which I should already do more often for the value they provide. The Casa Lapostolle is at Bevmo now for $ 12 so I will definitely be sampling that soon. I opened a high-end Chilean bottle of the Concha y Toro Don Melchor Cabernet 04

http://www.conchaytoro.com/PLT_loadflash.asp?SessionId=&Language=1&Modality=0&DateView=&NamePage=Home

not to long ago that was exceptional, and will likely improve over the next few years. On the more reasonable side of things from down south I like the Trivento (Argentina – viva la puma!) 05 Cabernet and 05 Malbec, both on sale for $ 10 at Bevmo these days. I see the La Planta is back in stock at K&L now, so I will definitely put that in the memory bank for my next visit down there. The local wine shop downtown you shipped those bottles to me has a Susan Balbo 05 Malbec, but it is coming up at $ 29. Not sure if there is that big a difference from 05 to 06, or just a higher end production. Just curious did you ever have any luck with them after the sampler you provided?

And thanks to chef for the thumbs up on the Alamos 06 Malbec, which I will also be picking up on my next trip to Bevmo at a very reasonable $9 these days.

And I would love to see some recipes chef. Always looking for something new I can throw together in the kitchen.

I count it as one of our strengths, but leave it to Giants fans to have threads about wine and recipes.

Don't forget the music threads, ones on film and literature and . . . midget clown porn.

Definitely a strength.
