Great story, Monkey...glad you are a Giants fan, too! It always amuses me when those get on the bandwagon when we are doing well and then they fall off when we are tanking big time (like right now!). The trueblue (not Dodger blue) fans will stick it out when the Giants are in the playoffs or lose 100 games!
I was a big baseball fan from when I was really little. But I was more into playing than watching.
I was born in California, but we moved out of state from ages 3 to 9.
My first memories of watching baseball was the Yankees beating the Dodgers in the World Series in 1977 when I was 6 (REGGIE!!!).
When we moved back to the Bay, Willie McCovey visited one of our little league games. And I started to care more about the Giants.
But I REALLY went nutz for the Giants when I started High School in 1985!!! We used to sit around and play APBA baseball with the 1985 Giants thinking if we just juggled the lineup then wouldnt suck so bad!!!
Watching the evolution of the Giants from 1985 to 1987 really got me hooked for life.
I almost felt like we grew up together...
I wish I could have seen McCovey, Cepeda, and Marichal put SF on the map.
When I first got to college, I figured out they had old Chronicles on Microfiche in the basement of the library.
I spent too much time reading tons of old Chronicles to get a sense of the time.
It was really cool to get a sense of history through real time naratives.
The lack of perpective of time, made it much more emotional, and real.
and dont worry, i spent more than enough time OUT of the basement partying too =)

I have to admit that for awhile I didn't follow the Giants much...my dad decided that it was warmer at A's games so we went to those games when I was in high school(the days of Reggie, Bando, Rudi, Catfish, Vida, etc). But, when I went to college, I started paying attention to the Giants again.
The ex was a Dodger fan and we would end up going to a lot of games at the Stick because we'd get better seats there than in LA...so I made him sit through a whole lot of Giant victories (especially in 1991 when the Giants knocked the Dodgers out...was funny to watch Giant fans do the Tomahawk chop to the Dodgers as we watched the scoreboard as Atlanta won their game as well).
I think my ex or my Dodger-loving brother gave me a video of the Giants history...haven't seen it in awhile but is full of good stuff! (I don't remember what year it goes up to).
