Why we need to draft a hitter in this years draft!

i think it is the consensus around here that the giants need to take a position player at #5 this year. In a dream world Alvarez would fall to #5, but there is also alot of other talent in Smoak, Alonso,& Beckham as far as position players that may be available at #5. I would be happy with any of those.

However, the main reason to take a position player this year is that we may just be drafting high enough next year to draft next year's TIMMY. His name is Stephen Strasburg and plays for SDSU, for any of you are not familiar with him already. Here is a link to his stats this year; http://goaztecs.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/spec-rel/sdsu-m-basebl-CumulativeStats.html

His stats are absolutely riduculous like Timmy's were and I believe he will ascend to the majors much like Timmy. He will probably be the #1 pick overall, but we may just be the owners of that pick, you never know. I would like us to play the kids to see what we have got in them and maybe in the process end up with this kid to go along with Cain, Timmy, & Sanchez, along with one of our other young stud prospects; Sosa, Bumgarner, & Alderson.

Anyways just one more reason why I would like to grab a position player this year and be in a position to draft Stasburg next year. There are some advantages to sucking while rebuilding (we may be able to get the next pitching phenom).

I don't think the team will be bad enough to get him in next years draft. He most likely will go number one overall.

Drafting based on what might happen next year in the draft is a bad idea...it's hard enough to predict how a draft will turn out six months before it happens, but a full year without a draft order in place?

The Giants are no lock for the Number 1 overall pick...there have been a lot of teams performing worse than them.

First off the draft order for next year is determined by this year and not next year just to clear up any confusion. The team's success next year has nothing to do with next years draft. We very well could be much improved next year with an additional year of experience for the young guys, some subtractions of the older guys, and any new free agent additions to the team.

While I do agree with Brute about not using next years draft possibilities as a reason to draft certain players/positions this year, I was just throwing out an additional reason to draft a position player with our high #5 pick and not another pitcher as we drafted two studs last year. As far as Brutes comment about ALOT of teams doing worse than the giants, that is not entirely accurate. According to the current standings the Giants are in line for pick #5 again (I know, there is still alot of season left). Having said that most people have said that the Giants have perhaps overachieved to this point and if we relapse we definately could fall below the Tigers and Rockies and be in a dead heat with the Mariners and Padres for the top pick.

Anyways I was just pointing out the possibility of being in the unenviable position of having the #1 overall pick next year, but at the same time having the opportunity to draft another stud pitcher that could ascend to the majors in time to team up with Cain, Timmy, and Sanchez. Only time will tell what will happen the remainder of this year.

It will be fun to see what really transpires next month in the draft. Hopefully we will get some good draft talk going on this site as there are many on here that know alot more than I do.

if we end with a pitcher like Matusz and the giants are in position to draft that you are so highly on. i don't mind if the giants grab as well. Since that would like Alderson and Bumgraner as trade chips for a legit bat.

I am with the "grab the best overall player" and not what you think you need or what might get next year.

Yes i agree with BPA theory, but this year the BPA should be a hitter, as I think guys like Hosmer, Alonso, Beckham, etc... are all better players that a finesse pitcher with the 5th pick.

Speaking of guys that could get to the majors quickly, wouldn't you guys have preferred that the Giants would have taken Rick Porcello with one of their picks?

Basically would you guys rather have Alderson or Bumgarner?

i dont think the giants have any choice but to draft a stud 3b/1b in this draft with free agency being dry the next couple of years. sure theres teixeria but the yanks need a 1b and have 50 mil coming off their books this year.

this is probably the best chance they can draft a impact hitter without screwing it up.
