Phillies want Cain?

Wonder if they have a couple of good bats in AAA.

Or just Chase Utley emoticon

The latest has the Phils hoping San Francisco, an NL West pretender, will shop 23-year-old right-hander Matt Cain.

Word is the Giants might part with Cain, who is 5-7 with a 4.06 ERA in 20 starts, if offered an intriguing package of young talent.

My Brewer fan friend seems to think that there will be a Cain for Fielder swap in the off season.

I'm not sure what his basis is. He does have a friend who has been in the Brewers organization for years, so he might have some knowledge about Fielder's status beyond this year. Beyond that, I'm not sure where Cain comes from, other than he is a young pitcher and that the Giants might be willing to give him up to get a power bat.

Prince is young....that would be a nice bat. We keep him for 3 or 4 years then Angel takes over...

Cain's money is set for several seasons, where Fielder's is not. He has a one-year contract. He's likely going into arbitration after this season. And it will cost the Giants more than they are paying Cain, IMO, to retain Fielder for 4 years.

The Phillies can "want" Cain all day long. The truth is that the Phillies don't have the prospects that the Giants need. Phila has pitching and outfield prospects that are "okay" but not the power hitting, corner infield prospects that the Giants would need in any deal for Cain.

As for the Brewers, if the Brew Crew were to package a deal around Gamel, Jeffress, Parra, and a fourth prospect, then sure, I'd deal Cain to them. However, straight up for the Vegetarian? I say pass. Especially since Fielder will cost the Giants a ton of cash to keep.

Just sayin'

Prince will definitely get paid in arbitration, but he wouldn't beat the 10 mill that Ryan Howard got...

8 Mill for Fielder next year MUCH better than 7 Mill for Ray this year! Plus, if we can trade Winn and promote Nate, that pays for it in itself!
