Minor League Notebook
Alright, I'm going to try and keep these update regularly, now that the line has die down at my other job. Enjoy!
Fresno Grizzlies (AAA): PCL All-Stars 6, INT All-Stars 5
Top Lines:
RP Geno Espineli - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO
Game Notes: Quite a day for Espineli. The only Grizzly to make an appearance in the game, he had a outing to hold the PCL at a 2-0 hole. He came in with two out in the 7th, stranding two runners, then got two more outs in the 8th. While he did not get the win, he had the most strikeouts of any PCL pitcher, who got 13 total. In the 9th, the PCL scored six runs, highlighted by an A.J. Ellis 2 RBI double. The game's winning pitcher, Luis Pena, gave up a two out, two-run home run to close the game, but held it there.
For Espineli, it was just a step towards one more honor. Espineli was named one of the representatives on the United States Olympic team. Espineli is the only Giant to make the team this year, but his spectacular season relieving in Triple-A earned him the honor.
Connecticut Defenders (AA): North All-Stars 5, South All-Stars 3
Top Lines:
2B Olmo Rosario - 2-2, 1 R, 1 2B (1)
SP Justin Hedrick - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO
RP Joe Martinez - 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 1 HBP
Game Notes: Say what you will about the Defenders this season, few teams could have matched the performance from Connecticut this year. For the first and perhaps last time this year, Hedrick got into a game ahead of ace Martinez. Hedrick pitched the second inning, and while he got no strikeouts, he was the only North pitcher to not allow a baserunner. Martinez, came in in the fifth, and was the only only pitcher from either team to go more than one inning. He would pick up the win for the North.
Rosario did not start, but came into the game in the sixth inning. His single led off the sixth inning, and while he did not score, it led to the three-run home run that took the game for the north. Rosario would score the team's fifth run, doubling to lead off the eighth inning.
San Jose Giants (High-A): Lancaster 6, San Jose 2
Top Lines:
RF Mike Mooney - 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 SO, .274
CF Mike McBryde - 1-3, 1 R, .281
3B Travis Denker - 1-4, .267
C Jackson Williams - 0-1, 3 BB, 1 SO, 1 PB (5), .250
SP Clayton Tanner - 4.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO, 1 HBP, 4.52 ERA, L (5-6)
RP Juan Trinidad - 2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO, 1 HR, 1 WP, 1 HBP, 1.96 ERA
Game Notes: Tanner had his third straight start of going less than five innings, and made just his second since returning from the DL on July 10th. Including his last two starts before the DL stint, he has allowed 12 runs in 17 1/3 innings. Trinidad allowed his first runs in nine games, a streak dating back to June 14th. During the eight game scoreless streak, he'd struck out 7 and walked five in nine innings.
Mooney hasn't been too hot since coming back to San Jose, going 4 for 14, but now has two doubles and two home runs for those four hits. Overall this season, he has 11 home runs in 196 at-bats. McBryde is batting .276 over his last ten games. Denker is 4 for 15 after his fourth game back in the California League. Williams has gone 1 for 11 in his last five appearances resulting in plate appearances. His three walks gives him eight in 16 games, and he has a .382 on-base percentage in San Jose.
Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A): Augusta 2, Hagerstown 0
Top Lines:
DH Thomas Neal - 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR (11), 1 RBI, 2 SO, .269
LF Garrett Baker - 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B (11), .254
SP Madison Bumgarner - 7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 11 SO, 1.79 ERA, W (9-3)
RP Dan Turpen - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 3.67 ERA, H (5)
RP Andy De La Garza - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 2.95 ERA, S (5)
Game Notes: Bumgarner struggling? So much for that. The Augusta Ace had allowed five runs over his last three starts (17 innings) and had managed just nine strikeouts against five walks (nearly a third of his season total) over that time. So much for that. His 11 strikeout performance was a season-high, and the scoreless outing was his first since a pair of 10-strikeout games on June 11th and June 21st.
Turpen threw his fourth scoreless outing in a row, and has allowed just one run in July over nine innings. De La Garza has a similar record, now allowing just one run over 8 2/3 innings. However, he has allowed three unearned runs. Neal now has three home runs over his last two games, though his average overall remains fairly poor. He has nine RBI over four games. Baker hit his first double since July 4th.
Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Short-A): Vancouver 4, Salem-Keizer 1
Top Lines:
RF Francisco Peguero - 2-4, 2 SO, .381
3B Jose Flores - 2-4, 1 SO, .257
SP Mike Loree - 5.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO, 1 WP, 1.59 ERA, L (1-2)
RP Joseph Edens - 3.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO, 3.38 ERA
RP Jason Neitz - 1.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO, 2.35 ERA
Game Notes: The early ace for the Volcanoes suffered through his worst game of the season. Loree had allowed just three earned runs and eight hits in 29 innings before this game, and he matched both totals in five innings today. He also gave up his first walk. Edens went for his longest outing of the short season, and now has 15 strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings. Neitz has given up two runs in 7 2/3 innings now.
Peguero has been doing alright in his time int he Northwest League, and his last four games has been his best, now hitting 9 for 15 with a double and triple. Flores has 17 walks and 26 strikeouts in 105 at-bats this season. He has just a .305 slugging percentage on the season with a .257 batting average.
AZL Giants (Rookie): Scheduled Day Off
The Giants are 10-10 on the season, sitting in 6ht place but just 4.5 games back of the first place Angels and 1.5 games back of the second place Padres. The Giants will pick up against the Rangers in Surprise and then at home against the Athletics. But after that, they'll get a home-and-home series against the Padres.

Re: …
I remember reading somewhere that Denker was sent to SJ instead of Fresno because Fresno was was nearing their all-star break.

My guess is to keep him close in case of a trade.
You brought a smile to my face...

Who is Mike Loree?
Thanks for the update.
Mr. Irrelevant, 2007.
Loree was the 50th round pick by the Giants (#1,441st overall) in 2007 out of Villanova. With a 4.73 college ERA and a strikeout rate that dropped every year until it was nearly 1 every other inning, not much was expected from him.
As a college senior in the AZL last season, he did do well, even considering his age: 1.13 ERA in 16 innings, 20 K's and 1 BB in 16 IP. The test for him was going to be moving up. How has he responded?
On June 30th: 6.0 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 7 SO
On July 5th: 7.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 HR, 0 BB, 7 SO
On July 11th: 7.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 SO
Bottom line, in three consecutive starts, he retired 62 of the 63 hitters he faced. That's pretty amazing, no matter the mitigating factors (like age) people apply to it. The final game was one out away from being a perfect game; the closer blew it for a loss.
Loree is 6'6", but I don't have a read on his pitches. I'll be in S-K in two weeks and will try to. Based on his age and experience, I can't say he's a prime prospect candidate; but his performance makes him impossible to discount, as well. All I can say is, let's see if he can keep it up (and at other levels, too).
For Denker, honestly, I see three things:
A.) He needs to play, All-Star Breaks in BOTH the PCL and EL don't allow that.
B.) Let's face it, he wasn't lighting Double-A on fire when he was there. Good, not great (not demotion worthy, though).
C.) It might simply be a confidence shot/favor for the moment. He is a California kid, and the Giants have been down near his home (he grew up in the Inland Empire area, though that's not exactly Lancaster, it ain't too far).

Re: …
I read that Denker just went down to A ball because of Fresno's AAA AS break -- I also read the plan is to promote him to Fresno this weekend, which is good. He has little business being down in A ball.
Pablo Sandoval who demolished A ball is even hitting in Connecticut -- showing power and an excellent average. Sandoval is still 21 and really progressing nicely.
The Giants should have an interesting competition at first base next couple of seasons (Ishikawa, Sandoval and Bowker) -- I really would like to see the idiot trade Winn for anything or even just to shed his salary so that Nate S. and Bowker could compete for that position and the others could compete for first base.
Winn is fine, but he is just taking up space for this season and next and since the Giants are not competing, he is of very little use.
