Deal with Milwaukee (Serious Rumor)
Brewers get: Durham, Taschner and a PTBNL (rumored to be Downs or Denker)
Giants get: AA C Angel Salome, A+ OF Darren Ford, AAA 1B/OF Brad Nelson
Quick hits: Salome is the centerpiece for the Giants. He's unsure to stick at catcher, but just turned 22 and has a .349/.405/.529 line in Double-A (Southern League). Ford, 22, fits the Giants' love of athleticism, and is one of the fastest players in the minors, but has contact issues (.230 avg, 88 SO in 343 at-bats). Nelson, 25, has a AAAA reputation, and is a lefty hitter with platoon issues. Is batting .301/.405/.482 while repeating the PCL this year. Did have 20 HR in a relatively poor year last season in Triple-A, so there's some power potential.
Don't have deep scoops on the prospects. I'm at work, analysis will come later (at least from me). I will say, on its face, I like this deal.

I hope Denker isn't included in the deal. Trading him away seems strange at this point. He has done nothing but succeed in the Giants organization since coming here. Still needs more time in the minors but he could contribute down the road.

Re: …
From a Brewers fan, for whatever it's worth:
"Brewer fan here... we know Ford is a definite part of the trade because he was pulled from the lineup at Class A Brevard County today. At the moment, I'm not sure the Brewers would give up Salome and Nelson on top of that. WSSP in Milwaukee has been known to jump the gun a bit when reporting trades. Anyway, Salome is one of the shortest players in the Minors, but has got a lot of pop of the bat with a great average. He's one of the prospects on our stacked Double AA team in Huntsville. Nelson is kind of an old prospect and always has produced in the Minors, but there's no real room for him in Milwaukee."

From project prospect:
Standing just 5-foot-7,Angel Salome (C, 6/8/86) and his .465 slugging (from High-A in 2007) makes up for any lack in stature. Salome was, however, sentenced to a 50-game suspension in July for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

Nelson seems like a possible partner for Bowker and Lewis, given those players' platoon issues.
Where would Salome play if not catcher? Few backstops have the foot speed to player up the middle, and 5'7" is awful short for a first baseman. That really only leaves an outfield corner or (please, please, please) 3B as likely destinations.

Someone over at MCC claims that Espineli just got called up. He says that he's friend of a friend of Espinelli's agent, so take it with a grain of salt.

Arg! Had I heard about the Salome rumor earlier, I would have taken a peak at him at a game. I live only about twenty minutes from the Stars' stadium (AA Huntsville).
