Time to give Mr Brian Sabean some credit
Alright, so overall Sabean makes some pretty bad trades.. probably netting a loss in talent over his tenure. And his free agent signings have left something to be desired as well.
He has to be given a lot of credit for his talent assessment however. Either he's really lucky, and it so happens that a lot of our lower round draft picks suddenly discover unexpected talent in our system, our coaching down there is magic, or Sabean really does have a special eye for young talent.
He should admittedly be our scouting director rather than our GM. But he's really a damn good scout, and has proven it recently, since he has now been given the go ahead to focus on the draft and player development.
I'll leave it to the board members to prove or disprove my statements with some examples. But I think our own Fred Lewis is such. Frankly I didn't think his raw talent would lead to what he's done. Recently I read something on here about an older (for a prospect) player with ridiculously good number.. the amazing thing being that he was drafted in just about the last round.

Re: Time to give Mr Brian Sabean some credit
Although I think Lewis has had a good season, I would not start handing out lifetime achievement awards to those that discovered him just yet. For a team that TRULY expects to contend, Lewis would be no more than a 4th OF. He is near MVP on a team that will be struggling to win 63 games.
Good player? yes
Likely to have a decently long career? sure
Gem to go down in the memoirs as a great draft pick? not quite

Lewis has a good half-season and suddenly we're handing Mr. Sabean a lifetime achievement award for player development?
What, did we all suddenly forget 1998-2006?

Ignoring the fact that none of those guys have done anything of note in the majors, that's the GMing equivalent of being a good bunter. Highlighting his skill at the least important part of his job strongly implies his overall incompetence.

sabean is a moron, hes been in charge of this team for over 10 years and the last impact player produced by this organization was matt williams and he retired 5 years ago.

My point with Lewis was that he isn't a man with can't miss tools. He wasn't really expected to make the majors out of the draft. The fact that he is headed for a decently long major league career a la Ray Durham is noteworthy.
I wouldn't call denker, davis, or velez decent prospects.
Much of the evidence for my claims can be seen in the surprising state of our farm, considering how recently the organization has started changing philosophies.

I don't give Sabean credit for a good farm crop, or a good draft. That isn't the GMs job. HIS job is to pick a good talent evaluator, and a good minor league chief, and stand back and let them work. The GM can only get a BAD evaluation if he picked bad evaluators and then doesn't fire them when they are obviously bad.

I'm pleased to no end that Sabean made this deal and am excited by these comments by the Giants GM:
"We stayed true to our word," Sabean said. "No matter where we were in the standings or what we thought our chances were, we needed at some point to turn our fortunes to our younger players. Our older players, if they were good enough in the market to be able to be acquired by somebody else, we were willing to do that. Thus, Ray is the first transaction."
I think that now Sabean is focused on re-building the farm system after years of neglect, he is doing a good job. I just hope that he can follow through with his words and trade a couple more veterans for some decent prospects and sign his first four draft picks in the next couple of weeks.
Also, my wish for the rest of the season is that the Giants work on a development plan for these youngsters instead of giving them the Jimmy Jack. Plus, I hope that somebody tells Rags to work on having the starting pitchers to challenge more hitters and stop giving up so many walks.
If all these things were to happen in this second half, I'd have to consider this year a very successful one.
Just sayin'

How about his ability to pull halfway decent prospects in trade for players most people truly believe could only be DFA'd, or getting talent for nothing.
Case in Point:
Kelvin Pichardo for Michael Tucker
Travis Denker for Mike Sweeney
Rajai Davis for Matt Morris
Eugenio Velez as a Rule 5 acquisition
I would prefer that he never sign those losers in the first place. Morris was a brutal signing and Sabean was saved by the dumbest GM in all of baseball.
Signing Tucker to intentionally lose a first-round pick -- true brilliance.
Mike Sweeney -- they did not pay him anything and Sabean did a good job in stealing Denker away (of course he was only able to do that b/c he trained Ned C. )
Durham -- 14 Million for two years -- another mistake and bad signing. It looks he got little in return, but at least the Giants save a couple of million dollars that can be used to pay draft picks. I'm all for that.
But to give Sabean kudos for getting out of bad contracts that he signed in the first place is like telling little Johnny after he gave up six runs in the first inning, but ended the inning with the a strikeout -- you pitched great b/c you got a strikeout.
