Re: It was just a fluke
Wilson is improving but would anyone be opposed to Merkin closing out games? He throws as hard as Wilson and has a better slider albeit his control isn't very good yet. I just hate how Wilson has this ego of he's the sh!t when in reality he's an average to above average closer, not great.

hey Einstein, your post here IS a personal attack.
so was this: "$9...turns out you ARE a jerk."
Don't hate me just because I dared disagree with your whiny complaints about the board posters here.
Wilson ****ed up that game and I expressed my one or two sentence displeasure with him for it. I didn't condemn him for all eternity, just for that game.
End of story.
No need for you to type twenty paragraphs crying about him, me and every other "non Padre fan" who sometimes get pissed at their favorite teams players.
Now get off my leg! sheesh!

Not hate the Giants? "Any kind of criticism"?
Hmmm...lately on this board we have the following about each person:
hitting coaches - suck
Bochy - suck
Sabes - suck
Renteria - suck
Lewis - suck
until the last month - Rowand - suck
Zito - suck
Sanchez - suck
Wilson - suck
Howry - suck
All offseason - Cain - never live up...he's had his chance
with exception to the Cain comment, where is that wrong?

Fresh - you make my point. Maybe we can just cut Wilson...think Benitez wants another $30M? Ok, I know you aren't saying you want that...but to say Wilson sucks (and is paid $400k), to me...those people lose credibility in their opinions...again, to me. Then again, if his WHIP goes down and he makes 5 all star games in a row & wins an MVP...folks here will then say he's ok...maybe.
Wilson is NOT a good closer. He is inconstant, often wild, and he walks waaaaay too many people. He seems to hndle high-pressure situations poorly - not good to see in a closer.
You also seem to be confusing "good" and "a good value". The fact that Wilson makes $400K has no impact on how good he is as a pitcher. It does, however, indicate how good of a deal he is. I can deal with Wilson when he is earning $400K (just as I could deal with Feliz when he was earning under $3M) - but as soon as the salary starts heading north of $2-$3M, if he is still pitching like he has been this year, I'd dump him and try some other kid (who is earning $400K).
"Saves" (in a vacuum, as the only stat used for evaluation) is a horrible way to evaluate/rank closers. Just as W-L is for starting pitchers.

You're right it's unfair to say Wilson sucks. But I hate him because he's painful to watch pitch. And frankly, I think there are probably other guys who can perform just as well, but that's a separate point.
Who can perform "as well" and why would the Giants want to replace Wilson with one of them?
Who: Merkin, Affeldt
Why: Bring in a hitter by trading Wilson.
I am not sold on Affeldt, take a look at his numbers over 8 seasons and Valdez has 40 career innings of ehhhhhh.
Who would Wilson fetch?
Well, that would take some roster scouring and a few trips to Cots and baseball Reference, but I would think you could take a top 7 prospect and Wilson and put together an attractive package.
--- Travis Ishikawa is NOT a competent first baseman.

It was just a fluke
Marco, I would just like to see if he can get better...I'm not convinced last year/this year is as good as he can be. He has been better than what we've had and he is a good value. Sure he makes me sweat...but not everyone is a stud right outta the gate.

Re: It was just a fluke
"Saves" (in a vacuum, as the only stat used for evaluation) is a horrible way to evaluate/rank closers. Just as W-L is for starting pitchers.
If we are going to use a single stat to evaluate closers, lets use "blown saves". Wilson has 4 blown saves, tied for 5th in the national league. Who has more than Wilson?
Joel Hanrahan (5), ERA of 7.71.
Aaron Heilman (5)
Cory Wade (6,) ERA of 5.88
Brad Lidge (7), ERA of 7.57.
Of those four pitchers, only Lidge is actually a closer for his team - the others are simply relief pitchers.
So, using blown saves as the single stat, Wilson is actually the 2nd worst closer in the NL. I don't think he's that bad, actually, but that's the risk you take when you look at one stat to evaluate a pitcher (like "20 saves, tied for 2nd in the NL"). Wilson is alos NOT the same class of pitcher that Francisco Rodriguez is (he's the other guy in the NL with 20 saves).

Ahhh, you were typing while I was typing
I agree 100% that he might get better. And until we can find someone better (either Wilson himself or someone else) - he's just fine (for $400K). But there are times when he plain *sucks* (like his last appearance) - when he does suck, he does so in an outrageously sucky manner - like the other night against the Brewers.
And if we *do* manage to find a decent, cheap replacement (Romo? Paterson?) then I hope that we can find a team that values guys "with 40+ saves" so that we can get something really nice back in a trade.
