BUMGARNER WATCH 09

Latest Start:

6/25/09: Win 8 IP 1 ER and 5K's.

09 Season Stats: 8-2 1.79 ERA 38 K's.

Just a reminder:

08 Season Stats: 15-3 1.46 ERA 164 K's.

All-in-all I just do not see what this kid could possibly do better. He does not really know what it is like to have an ERA below 2.00 which is just sick. I think on most teams he would honestly be up already, regardless of age.

Re: BUMGARNER WATCH 09

He's reportedly still essentially a one-pitch pitcher, with sub-par secondary offerings and a very funky delivery. While it's not unheard of for a starter to get by on just a fastball and deception (see Chris Young), most pitchers with a limited arsenal struggle to start in the majors despite minor league dominance (see Jonathan Sanchez). He should be given every opportunity to develop at least one dependable complimentary pitch in the minors, because the pressure of a major league game is not conducive to working on that sort of thing.

I'd be more inclined to call up Alderson, whose performance has been just as impressive. Reportedly, he has a more complete arsenal, excellent command, and pitching acumen beyond his years. Though his upside is probably limited by lesser stuff (specifically, velocity), he may have less to learn in the minors than Bumgarner.

Agreed, 100%.

Bhaakon,

While I respect your opinion, I think you failed to mention that Madison Bumgarner WAS a one-pitch pitcher. Now he has had over a year and a half of minor league seasoning, during which he has compiled a sub 2.00 ERA.

Do you think a pitcher could hold such an ERA with just a fastball? No that is not logical. I have not seen Madison pitch in person, but from the videos I have seen on youtube, his delivery is one of his main assets.

What do you call Lincecum's delivery? Def. Funky.

Our best opportunity to gauge Bumgarner will be the Futures game. If he goes up against some good bats and does well, I say call him up after the game.

Call me crazy, but this is almost like not skipping a kid a grade, even though he is bored there. He is a baseball genious...skip him from 4th grade to high school!

I heard Evans and others say that he was getting a lot of swing-throughs on his slurvy/slide thing the second half of last year. and that it was developing into an out pitch.

And I've never read anything him having a funky delivery. Tim Alderson has a funky delivery, though.

Actually, it is very logical that he had been getting by on his fastball alone. He has an elite fastball and has pitched most of the time in low and high A ball, you can dominate those leagues with an elite fastball.

He has made some pretty good strides since switching his breaking pitch, but I don't mind letting him stay in the minors a bit longer and really working on his secondary pitches. I would like to see him have that slider and change up as at least average pitches when he comes up.

I'm aware that this is similar to his draft-day scouting report, but it's one that I've recently heard repeated on the radio by a scout who has watched him in Norwich. I wouldn't trust Evans (or any other team exec) to accurately report on his own players. That said, both could be correct: His breaking ball could be getting swing throughs AND still be inconsistant.

A quote from an interview with MadBum, regarding his pitches:

quote:

MB: I have a fastball, obviously, and I throw a slider and a changeup. The changeup is coming along really good, and the slider has been pretty good last year and this year. Hopefully they’re all on their way to being plus pitches.
