Blue Jays?
I find it hard to believe that the Jays would start dumping players given they are still in the hunt in the AL East. However this tidbit from MLBTRAderumors: "Jeff Blair of the Globe and Mail gets the sense that the Jays are ready to move Vernon Wells and/or Alex Rios for just about anything to free up enough money to keep Roy Halladay after next year."
We know that Sabean has had a "man crush" on both Rios and Wells for some time. However, given their stupid contracts (in terms of years AND dollars) I wonder if Sabean might still try and go after one of these guys if Toronto would be willing to pay a significant amount of the remaining dollars and/or take less in terms of propsects? What would the Giants give up to get Rios or Wells?
Personally, I like Rios but not at the cost of a top pitching prospect. If Toronto wants to take on a bad Giants contract, like Rowand in return, then fine but not for a top Giants prospect or Matt Cain.
I still think the Giants should be talking to five teams: Pittsburgh, KC, Seattle, Cleveland and DC. Between those teams I think the Giants could find some less expensive bats that could help the team this year and beyond, e.g., V-Mart, Garko, Doumit, Sanchez, LaRoche, Morgan, Teahen, DeJesus, Lopez, Milledge, Dukes, etc.
Just sayin'

Wells' deal is jaw droppingly awful.
Almost Tom-Hicks-stupid.

Yeah I know. Almost exactly like Zito's in years and dollars. Yuck.
Rios' contact isn't much better.

Yeah I guess, "Larry-Baer-stupid" would have been more accurate.

At least Zito's isn't as bad as Bobby Bonilla's (maybe it is)...$1.2M/yr to BB through 2035 (not a typo). Good thing the Mets have $$$.

I was thinking maybe Rios with half of the money covered for a fungo, and some balls, but then I see he has never hit more than 24 HR with a declining trend over the past season and a half, and he's never had an OBP above .354. I have no doubt Schierholtz could do that. So...

Agree with that. Rios adds nothing that we don't already have.
Wells on the other hand...The Jays would have to pick up at least half of that ridiculous contract though.

I'd rather watch Bowker and Nate get the playing time, than either Wells or Rios. Hell, with the horrible contracts those two have, I'd only take them if TOR paid at least half of the contract AND sent a top prospect or two with them. Both contracts are worse than Rowand's.
And even then, I'd think not just twice, but 3 or 4 times!

Re: Blue Jays?
My thoughts are simple. Why should we pick up bad contracts for the sake of slight upgrades when there HAVE to be bigger and better deals? Rios is not anything special IMO and Wells doesn't come close to warranting the kind of contract the BJays handed to him.
Wells' contract would handcuff us from going after bats in trade(Berkman) or FA over the next couple seasons that are MUCH better and suit our needs much better.
