Hairston is trash, and the only reason I would want to trade for him, is so he does not kill us next week when they come to town. For some reason he only plays well against us. I honestly think we could get more for Sanchez. He would be more valuable as a LH arm to add to the pen, and this makes Valdez expendable. Apparently teams want him.
Nick Johnson would be my favorite out of the group. I mean Johnson would just absolutely love hitting in that cove, and hitting close to his homtown, Sacramento. He would probably cost us Valdez, Ishikawa and Sosa. I think that would be a fair package for the Nationals and set them up with a pretty sweet future staff of Strasburg, Zimmerman, Detweiler, Sosa, and Martis.

Unfortunately Hairston for Sanchez would be a relatively fair deal based on their current value. However, the Giants would be both buying high on Hairston and potentially selling low on Sanchez.
Personally, I like Hairston. His stats right now are simply off the hook:
OPS: .929
OPS+: 156
If he had enough at bats to qualify, he'd rank in the top 5 in OPS+. But is he REALLY this good? I don't think so. But he's cleary a better option than Winn or Lewis. And despite missing 20+ games, would rank 2nd on the Giants in homeruns.
But I'd suggest you could likely get equal production from someone like Adam LaRoche withoug having to give up as much.
It simply amazes me someone believes this. He is "clearly" better than Winn or Lewis? Is it that you are ONLY looking at his 54 games this year? Are you aware (or do you believe it supports your viewpoint) that he he hit .248 last year (another partial season) or that he hit .243 before that? I could see an argument that he is maybe a better option RIGHT NOW...but to say he is CLEARLY better than Winn (and his .300BA the last 2 years...OPS near .800 and a long track record vs Hairston's 2 incomplete seasons) seems like ignoring anything but stats to date this year only. Lewis? Lewis has very similar career #s to Hairston with more SBs and less time in the majors (Hairston first came up in 2004).
I just don't get how folks can make claims about who to trade, give up on, who's better, etc. by simply looking at THIS season or this MONTH for that matter.

Re: Rumor Central
OPS+ the last three seasons:
Winn:
105
105
91
Hairston:
94
115
156
I can't help it if you can't see Hairston is clearly better. Yup, simply amazing your inability to evaluate baseball players.

Really skip on Hairston. I much rather have Bowker come up than him. The positive would be that he would not kill us anymore.

Pirates Notebook: Giants eye Sanchez, LaRoche
Sunday, July 05, 2009
By Dejan Kovacevic, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
MIAMI -- The Pirates and San Francisco have had trade talks regarding second baseman Freddy Sanchez and, to a lesser extent, first baseman Adam LaRoche, each of whom can be a free agent after this season.
The Giants have had a scout following Sanchez, a source confirmed yesterday, and their interest in LaRoche goes back several months. Their preference at first base, though, is for a right-handed bat.
Sanchez has a vesting option in his contract that allows him to trigger an $8.5 million option if he achieves 635 plate appearances or 600 plate appearances plus an All-Star berth. The latter will be known today when selections are made.
LaRoche is the Pirates' second-highest paid player at $7.05 million, and there is some skepticism within the team that he can be moved with about half of that amount still due.
Other players the Pirates are known to have discussed with other teams -- and such discussions are highly commonplace and vary in their intensity -- are shortstop Jack Wilson, reliever John Grabow and, only in an exploratory sense, closer Matt Capps. The latter apparently would be moved only at a high price

Sanchez would be a great pick up for us, as we all already know what he can do as a player. For the 1B pick up I would want Huff first, then LaRoache.
