ROB NEYER QUOTE ABOUT CAIN

john (sd):

What are the Giants chances of having 3 All Stars? Cain, Lincecum, and Kung Fu Panda

Rob Neyer:

I don't know that Cain is particularly deserving -- he's been a little lucky -- but if there's not room for Kung Fu Panda, I'm not watching.

Hey Neyer. How about you look at Cain's ERA and tell me that he has been lucky this year? How about his career ERA? The fact that there are guys out there like Neyer who can't show Cain love disgusts me. The guy has been better than every pitcher besides Lincecum and Haren!

If you look at Cain's BABIP and strand rate, he has been extremely lucky this year. His peripheral numbers aren't that far off his careers numbers, which has his ERA in the mid 3s.

However, all-star selections are made based on stats like wins and ERA, in which case the arguement could be made that Cain should be starting the AS Game, let alone be in it.

The fact that he has been lucky, and that he maybe hasn't pitched as well as his numbers would indicate is completely separate from if he should be an All-Star or not.

It's not that Cain has been *lucky* this year, but rather that he's been very *unlucky* every other year.

A 1.20 WHIP and 3.60 ERA are still perfectly respectable and boarderline all-star numbers, all things considered.

Re: …

while I get that Cain's peripherals aren't as impressive as his W total or ERA, it's amusing to think that Neyer really believes that Manuel will give a crap about Cain's strand rate and BABIP when he is making up his staff.

The thing that has gotten me to come around on Cain is that some of his peripherals are way up over the past month.

June
K9 9.95 (April 6.9, May 6.3)
BAA .192 (April .255, May .250)
WHIP 1.08 (April 1.31, May 1.31)

Those are Cy Young type numbers in June. I agree with Neyer regarding April and May, but he has been dominant in June, and there's no way around that.

Yeah Neyer can be a prick but he also like Sandoval,

Jason, I don't want to put any limits on the Panda. He can "catch," he can "play third base" and "first base" ... I don't know what's next. I'm just going to settle in and enjoy whatever it is..."

So maybe Neyer is a jerk only 50% of the time?

Just sayin'

Over the top much?

If you look he explains why he thinks he has been a bit lucky, and he gives at least decent evidence to why he could feel that way. Stop being overly dramatic and trying to make it out like he said Cain is the worst pitcher in the world. Leave that kind of crap to the teenage girls, they do enough of that already.

Wow sorry man, just trying to get Cain some love.

I just don't get how any manager could justify not sending a guy like Cain who is top 3 in ERA and Wins. Cain has been dominant this year and not lucky.

Well Cain deserves the love and I think he deserves to be in the all star game. I just think the Neyer can shove it stuff is a bit over the top just because he doesn't think Cain is as good as we all think he is.
