Earlier this week, I doubted that Barry Bonds was voted into the All-Star game by the fans following a massive surge to pass up Alfonso Soriano. Well, turns out I was right, if you believe what's going on at Giantsboard.com.

User "fugthebums," who has since been knighted, created an online program that supposedly allowed Giants fans to vote online for Bonds 25 times in about 30 seconds. And with the use of the F5 refresh key, code users could potentially vote online for Bonds 3600 times in an hour.

Shortly after the program was unveiled on the boards, it was then pointed out that you could vote on MLB.com without validating your email address. That's right -- you could use a fake address to vote. User FUG figured out a few tricks that allowed fans to vote for Bonds 25 times in 20 seconds. Once it was announced that Bonds had won the fan's vote, the Giantsboard crowd rejoiced over what they felt was their victory. Someone even called into Bay Area sports station KNBR to let them know about the trick used to get Bonds into the game. But some of the members of the message board have begun to doubt the impact they had on the vote. Dave Del Grande, he of Billy Beane/Milton Bradley infamy, thinks the trick worked.
n his latest column, Del Grande wrote:

It's now clear Giants fans gave Bonds a performance-enhancing injection in the voting.

One group from San Jose claims to have electronically hand-delivered Bonds 600,000 deadline-beating votes. Another computer whiz says he personally added 200,000 to the Giant's total.

Re: …

No one really knows if Fug's program even worked.

We could definitely have done without all the negative publicity caused by FUG taking it upon himself to call KNBR and boast though...

But that subject has been covered already, so..

Fack 'em all--Bonds deserved to be in -- and he is in.

End of story.

In regards to the overall process-

It's a stupid system anyway. Sportwriters, players and managers should choose the starting team and the bench players.
Let the fans do their popularity vote thing for the last five players added.

Five is more than enough to make sure that any extremely fan popular players, or ones that were unfairly overlooked, would still get in there.

( If that were the case, Holliday would have probably made the team, as he should have.)

And if it's going to determine WS home field advantage-- then play to win, not to showcase players by subbing them in every inning

OR better yet-- if they are going to showcase, then get rid of the stupid WS Home field advantage result and have the best regular season W-L record determine it.

Facking exhibition game staffed via fan selection and not hardly even truly managed to win, should never determine ANYTHING in the Post season.

The author is probably a giants hater in the first place.

How would he know that the Cubbies fans voted fairly?? For all we know, the Cubs fans could have voted for him many times with fake emails, many different emails, or even that F5 thing.

Soriano started the season slow, went on the DL and started to do better offensively recently. I think some cheating was involved with the Soriano votes too.

The fact that the race was close was odd too......if teh Giants fans had been the only ones cheating, wouldn't Bonds have won by a million or so votes?

MLB likely doctored the numbers, it was probably some unbelievable number and margin.

Bonds blew out Griffey Jr. and Soriano.
