Matsui's only value is as a DH. He can't run or field at this point in his career.

Exactly. The Yanks have noodle-arm Damon playing LF over Matsui- what does that tell you. No way Matsui can handle LF in ATT; I dont think he's been a full time OF in close to 2 years. He's AL/ DH material only.
Put this in your pipe and smoke it.

The Yankees have interest in bringing back Johnny Damon -- "We need him," A-Rod said -- but could well get competition from at least the White Sox and Giants.
I know it's just a writer speculating, but man, that would be the apocalypse.

Damon would be a colossal waste of money for a multitude of reasons:
1) His power is greatly inflated by the new Yankee Stadium.
2) Injury and age concerns.
3) We have enough slappy hitters.
4) Can't field or throw worth ****.
If Sabean even thinks for a second about signing him, he should be fired on the spot. However, we all know by now that Sabean will be allowed to make one ignorant move after another.

Agreed on all points and will ad what is probably the most offensive thought, if the Giants do indeed sign him, they will have outbid the Yankees for him. Last thing I saw about Yankee/Damon talks were 2/32. How awesome would it be to have Damon in LF and Rowand in CF for something like 27 million a year through 2012. I think I would just turn in my Croix and become a displaced Flying Squirels fan.

I agree. I like Damon but not now. Five years ago, hell yes but not today. Again that is what scares me about the potential of Sabean adding a "professional hitter" or two. To me that means he is going to add a Dye-Matsui-Damon-Blalock type and that is totally the wrong direction to take this team.
Just my $.02

The Damon thing is just not even worth talking about. Matsui said he's open to playing 1st base. That might be admission to his days of playing the field are near the end, but not admitting to them being over. As far as 1st base goes, I think they should look for a LF'er first. Because there's the chance they only get 1 of the 2. I feel better about the incumbent 1st base situation than the incumbent LF situation.
Although having Hensley around raises my hopes for Bowker, so who knows....I have little faith in the staying power of Velez offensively at this point. I guess I lean in with the McCovey Chronicles guy on him. And on the other hand, Ishi/Garko I can see the platoon working. Granted, Garko didn't take to the transition well, but I believe he'll get used to it and make the adjustments. He really didn't get the chance to. The Garko trade really had me scratching my head, but whatever, he's here now. I think he can work well enough offensively, using Ishi as late inning defense Sub/PH.....I guess I'm not willing to give up on Ishi, either.

Matsui did not play an entire game this season on the field due to his back problems. I have a hard time believing that year of rest from the outfield is sufficient for his back while he learns a new position. Given the limited free agency options I say let Garko and Ishikawa duke it during spring training.
