Argue no, but there was the case a few weeks back of a son who wanted to donate a kidney to his dad and the insurance company told him he would be denied his own coverage for life because he would have a pre existing condition.

That was my scary point.

Report out today says there is between $505 and $800 billion in waste in the healthcare system. Eliminating some of that waste would go a long way towards paying for the costs of this overhaul.

I don't understand, for example, why my records are not electronically accessible not only to my doctor(s) but to myself? Why do I fill out the very same information inefficiently every time I see a new health provider? Why can't that data be stored in central warehouse and accessed via secure retrieval over a private network?

The other thing driving up costs in the USA is malpractice insurance. Doctors run scared of lawsuits, hence they usually order more tests and medicines than are necessary so as to avoid lawsuits. Capping awards as is done in nearly all countries in the world would reduce this expense and bring down the cost of healthcare.

Finally, we need to have MORE doctors, physician's assistants and nurse practitioners available for routine medical care to keep it OUT OF THE EMERGENCY ROOM which not only drives up costs, but jeopardizes the care of people who have real emergencies.

The malpractice thing has been the big issue for decades now. That first started when my uncle was still practicing, which was at least 30 years ago.

At any rate, the scary part is that while the cost of malpractice insurance has skyrocketed, the quality of medical care has drastically deteriorated. Why not hold doctor's to a little higher standard while we're at it? If they don't want to pay so much in malpractice suits, then why not do their jobs right in the first place? There's a concept. emoticon

A lot of people hold doctors in this almost mystical esteem when they are just like any other profession. If you don't like the service, go somewhere else. I agree that care has deteriorated, but a doctor shouldn't be afraid of a lawsuit if he/she deems a test unnecessary or a drug inappropriate.

No, that's true...I agree there. I don't have a problem with a doctor exercising his/her professional judgement. My own doctor is loathe to do too much testing. But there's a difference between that and doctors making significant mistakes in care/treatment. Seems you hear a lot more of those kinds of nightmare stories these days. If doctor's were held to a little higher standard, perhaps those kind of incidences would go down and thus malpractice insurance rates could as well?

On that I might disagree. I sat in front of the TV last night and saw ads for tort actions against Tricor, Yaz and something else...don't remember what.

The late Richard Jeni once did a comedy routine that went something like this, 'Have you gotten out of bed? Are you breathing? You may be entitled to big money in a legal settlement!"

I actually think the quality of health care probably far exceeds the quality of, say, automotive repair, but when something goes wrong the consequences are a lot more dire.

I'm not sure I agree on that one...I think the quality of healthcare has drastically declined in the last decade or so. I don't deny that incidences of lawsuits - whether warranted or not - have risen, but I don't think health care is where it should be quality wise given the advance state of this country. Just my feeling.
