The great NBC experiment

I find the Jay Leno show experiment very interesting. Im sure you know he is on M-F at 10pm. This allows NBC to move its shows like Law & Order to 9pm and means they dont need to produce one prime time show every night. Over the long haul this saves them tons of money and lets them thin out the junk shows they have now. Ive already heard other networks are keeping an eye on this and may follow suit.

Ive actually liked the show so far, the one hour format keeps things moving.

Um, much as I love Jay and I was glad to see some of his regular features like Headlines and Jaywalking back, what I've seen of the show has been terrible. Most of the comedians aren't funny, even Jay's own jokes are strained, and the gags/skits are awful. Some of the guests have been good but others...Pee Wee Herman?

I'll be surprised if Jay lasts long against some of the other network's 10 o'clock juggernauts. He took an immediate and significant dip in the ratings from his first week to his second, when the other shows had their season premeires. I don't see that letting up unless his show improves its quality drastically.

I love Headlines...it's the only thing I watched regularly when he was at 11, but I haven't even managed to see that more than once since he switched to 10...just too many other things on.

Well the point wasnt if you liked it or had watched it, but the effect it could have on all of prime time.

It is cost savings that wrought all this reality show crappola we're forced to endure.

I just don't see it having that major an effect on prime time...I don't see it cutting into the standard 10 o'clock programming.

Re: The great NBC experiment

Well its not the 10 pm shows Im referring to, its the crappy dime a dozen 8pm shows, that will now be weeded out and replaced with the 9pm shows, and the 10 pm shows like Law & Order are now the 9pm staples. The point is, its costs a LOT of cash to produce a show, even a pilot, so in effect NBC is wiping the books of 5 crap shows per season,(actually 10 since they put even worse **** on in the summer repeat time) thats huge, and point number two is it pushes the more PG13 shows from 10pm to 9pm which pushes the envelope on when we see what. (The domino effect I suppose) Again, this will all depend on whether or not other networks jump on the bandwagon.. I mean TV networks NEVER imitate success right? RIGHT? emoticon

Not exactly, it was the actors strike back in oh I think 1998 that brought about Survivor, since they could not use SAG actors someone came up with the idea to use regular Joes and pay them like it was a game show, a brilliant idea for them, mental agony for us. Of course it made them billions, but it wasnt conceived by cost cutting, they were just banging their collective head against the wall trying to figure out WTF to put on instead of a season of re-runs.

I miss Re-run, he was the best part of "What's Hap'Ning" emoticon

As far as imitation being the sincerest form of flattery, I never tire of hearing the jokes on Psych about The Mentalist.
