Keystone Games
Having never participated in the Keystone State Softball games, our Team had no idea what to expect, or to plan for.
This years tournament was held at Hess field in Boalsburg, and tournament play was listed from July 16-22. I emailed the District Commissioner, requesting information on how the tournament was run. Was it conceivable that we would play everyday? Would we play during the work day? I got absolutely no response from the TD.
Parents were asking when we would play? Do they have to take off work? and number of other questions I could not answer.
We finally found a post on the district 8 web site for the tournament bracket. The 16U tournament was held Thursday and Friday. There were only a few game on Thursday with remaining pool play and a full 10 team double elimination tournament on Friday.
Our day started at 10 am with a win and an immediate game at 12 noon. We lost this one and played again immediately at 2:00. Fortunately we lost this one and were eliminated. Earlier we lost a girl because she was throwing up due to the heat. We continued on with 9. The team that eliminated us still needed to win 2 more games just to get to the Bronze medal game. All these games in a row with no break in mid 90 degree weather is insane.
Here is why we will probably never play under this format again as well as at this complex:
1) Lack of information as to what to expect
2) Paid for this tournament well over a month in advance, but received paperwork (Roster) on June 11th requesting that it be returned by the 12th
3) Format is terrible, there should be breaks. How do you expect a team to play every 2 hours from 10am to 6pm in mid 80's heat? Too much strees on pitchers and catchers.
4) Hess fields are men's fields and are not really in good shape. There are more dips/holes on the infield than any complex that we have played at all year.
5) Facilities do not have adequate warm up areas
6) Facilities are not team or family friendly.
For your teams over all health and well being, your money would be better used at another tournament elsewhere.
