When Pelican uncoiled 2003's Australasia on an unsuspecting public, almost everyone within earshot talked about the disc as if it were the second coming of Christ, Siddhartha Gautama, Vishnu and Moshe Diane reincarnated as four instrumental shamans from Chicago with a finely honed sense of metallic power-drone dramatics. And the few who didn't turned their prayer rugs to face Mecca, anyway, just in case. Turns out they were all right; in terms of modern sonic experiences, Pelican are about as close as you're gonna get to nirvana, Valhalla, Shangri-La. etc. The epic instrumnetal passages on The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw is the sound of musicians so far beyond vying for supremacy with any other band that might be considered their "contemporaries" that they've been forced to challenge nature itself to a death match. ****, they even use an acoustic guitar this time. - j. bennett
