Re: Stars job hunting update
Well, bad news, ladies. I had the interview this morning and it was an annoying farce.
I drove 50 minutes to this nursing home, arrived 30 minutes early, and sat there waiting until the interview itself started -- 30 minutes late.
The two women handling the hiring had me and two younger applicants sit together while they explained things about the place. Then they said something to each other like "Hmm. This is a bit unusual. How should we handle this?" Then they said they would do separate 15 minute interviews and suggested that I stay while they send the others out.
Once the other two were out they started sounding vague and apologetic. It turned out that they -- like the last twits who called me -- had not actually read my resume before calling me, and had assumed I had a year of nursing college, rather than one semester. (Two semesters would mean that I'd have some clinical experience.)
They admitted that when they realized their mistake they had considered calling me to cancel, but for some idiotic reason they hadn't. They asked me if I had done any work in a health care setting (well it would be on my resume if I had, so obviously not) and then they admitted that they felt very awkward and they were sorry for wasting my time. They really couldn't have handled it much worse than they did, and all the while I'm trying to sound gracious and unconcerned ("thank you for taking the time to speak to me" "keep me in mind if openings come up in other departments") etc but it was extremely embarrassing and a bit insulting.
It was abundantly clear that their little confused moment before my private interview was a result of knowing they were going to give me the brush off, but not wanting the other applicants in the room, which indicates their minds were made up before they interviewed me. Not only that, but since they knew that they weren't interested before I ever arrived and they also knew that I arrived first and well ahead of time, one of them could have explained things to me before the group interview, privately, instead of wasting even more of my time while I waited for the other applicants to show up, listened to the spiel about the nursing home, etc.
Once home I went for a 3 hr nap, and when I woke up I realized that this is the way its going to be this summer. Seneca College has screwed us up by having a summer break for us after our first semester, but not next summer when we will have 3 semesters under our belts and people would actually want to hire us.
I phoned the temp agency (who had 2 assignments for me while I was away and unable to take their call) and they had nothing for tomorrow. I've decided to phone the temp agency twice a day until they give me something just to get rid of me.

Well that just sucks. What an inconvenience.

Great idea! One of my mom's favorite sayings is "the squeaky wheel gets the oil!"
Best of luck!
