My poor puppy

On Sunday afternoon Nathan was playing with Patch and found that he had a lump on his head, behind his eye. It didn't seem to be bothering Patch so we figured he must have hit his head on something. When we got up on Monday morning that side of his head had swelled up twice it's normal side. So instead of being in bed where I should have been (I stayed home from work because I had a massive headache and my stomach was acting up), I spent the morning on the phone calling around to vets trying to find one that we could take him to (amazing how none of the vets around here will work with you to make a payment plan, but that's another gripe). We finally found a place that only charges $30 for a visit and Nathan took him there. The vet looked at him, shaved a little bit of his head and tried to see if the knot would drain. Since it wouldn't drain he said it was probably an infection and prescribed antibiotics and a fever reducer (Patch had a very slight fever). When Nathan told him that we would have to pick up the antibiotics the next day cause we only had enough money to pay for the visit the vet just charged us for the antibiotics and to update his rabies vaccine.

But, Patch is doing better now and the swelling seems to be going down. And he's his normal, happy self. Except he looks kinda like the Elephant Man when you look at his head face on. My poor baby puppy... emoticon

A week ago this past Sunday, the knot had started swelling back up again, but by the end of the weekend started draining. By Monday morning the draining had bothered him so much that he scratched a big gash on the side of his face so I took him back to the vet Tuesday afternoon. They had to sedate him, shave the side of his face, make a long incision, drain the wound some more and sew him up. And on top of that he's going to start another round of antibiotics, these ones stronger, on Friday. My poor puppy has stitches on the side of his face and has to wear a cone for the next 2 weeks.

Re: My poor puppy

Sorry to hear about your puppy's discomfort! And I can empathize with your concerns about the cost. It has become obvious that we are living well beyond our means, and lately we have also had to fork out LARGE amounts of money for pet care when the money isn't really there!

It amazes me, I mean I know they need to make money too. But is it really that mush of a hassle to have to work with someone to make payments, especially in this economy??!! And they wonder why so many pet owners don't get their animals shots, routine care or get them fixed. Cause it costs too dang much and most people just don't have the extra income right now.

No more antibiotics for the puppy, yeah!!! And just in time for him to go to my parents while we're on vacation. He got his stitches out last night (they even let us keep them, lol) and the vet said he looked really good. Now the scar just has to heal and his hair has to grow back.

Sad to read about poor little patch. I wonder what caused this to happen? Did you ever find out. I'm glad to hear he's doing better now and feeling his old puppy self! I hear you on the health care for pets, it's out of control. When our cat was sick (and dying - though we didn't know it at the time) we took her to an animal hospital. They did X-rays and blood work and gave her oxygen. They found she had a large tumor in her stomach that was probably cancer and she was so weak they didn't think she would survive a $3,000 surgery. Hearing that made US weak too. Since she was nearly 15 years old we decided to end her suffering. We went home without our beloved Stella Frecklepuss but it still cost us $600 for all the tests. We have since decided that we can't afford to have any pets at this time. People need to realize that it can get very expensive to own a pet, and some own more than one. Sometimes we just think how much fun it would be to have a puppy or a kitten, and we don't realize that we may not be able to afford proper care for the animal. It's getting to be ridiculous isn't it? And so damned sad.

Good luck to your sweet puppy! And have fun on vacation! I'm sure you need one about now.

All they ever said was that he had some kind of infection, nothing else. I guess we're just lucky it wasn't something much more serious cause I don't know how we would ahve paid for it.
