Re: An argument against self-diagnosis
*shrug*
Bit late for me. My diagnosis was completely by accident. My sister went on the diet (she's had an official diagnosis now), and I kept complaining that she got really nice food and I didn't (being the kind of celiac that abhorrs gluten). AJ finally got sick of it and put me on the same diet on the condition that I was to do it properly and I wasn't allowed to cheat in any way for a full month. Frankly I didn't care - I like the new diet much better anyway. When we saw what a difference it made, I was told that even if I wanted to go off it I was not allowed lol. :)
BTW - 1lost1 pointed me here.

Hi Bab5cheetah and welcome to the board! Wow, another celiac finally! I was beginning to think the statistics were wrong and I was the only person on Earth with it!
I think what I've been learning is that most of the diagnoses of celiac or gluten-intolerance is accidental or after a very long process of elimination. And it's so easy to find out. Just quit eating the gluten for a few weeks and see what happens.
I have a friend whose husband has quite a lot of symptoms that they can't figure out. I suggested he try the gluten-free diet for a few weeks but you know what? I think he's so afraid that he might be allergic to wheat that he won't go on the diet to test it. His favorite foods are full of gluten. It's gotten so bad now though that he has an appointment on Tuesday and may get an endoscope. That will show celiac if he has it anyway. I just don't know how he will handle it if the diagnoses is celiac.
I'm glad you tried it on your own and got such good results though. How long have you been on the gluten-free diet now? It's been only 10 months for me. I have found reasonable substitutes for most of my previously favorite foods.
I'm glad that 1lost1 sent you! Maybe we can share ideas!

Uh.. how long... gawd, I don't know. Somewhere around about a year, by now. My sense of time is almost nonexistant.
I'm still trying to find a substitute for ginger kisses! Man do I ever miss them still! Fortunately, we found a substitue for liquorice, so I can have that again. :) Even if it is a bit saltier than the normal stuff.
1lost1 actually sent me here when the fact that I was a celiac came up during a conversation about autism - it actually seems to be something quite common amoung autists, for some reason.

Yes, I have been reading that about autistics having a high degree of gluten intolerance. There has to be a connection there but not all autistics react favorably to a gluten free diet, so there must be more to it than meets the eye.
I found some Snickerdoodles (ginger cookies) that are unbelievably awesome, though expensive. The brand name is ENJOY LIFE and here is their website, though I found these in my local grocery store (which has a large natural foods section).

Now I need to know the name of that licorice! I was really upset when I read the label on my favorite Twizzlers to find out they have wheat in them!

It's called Molasses Liquorice from this new company called Orgran. I'm in NZ, so I don't know if you'll be able to get it too... it's nice, though.
