The Death Penalty, strictly a business analysis
Put aside for a minute:
1. The whole "sanctity of Life" issue;
2. The whole "inherent fallibility of the justice system" issue; and
3. The whole "state sanctioned killing" issue.
Put those all aside and lets analyze the death penalty strictly from a cost benefit analysis.
At the trial level, death penalty cases are estimated to generate roughly $470,000 in additional costs to the prosecution and defense over the cost of trying the same case as an aggravated murder without the death penalty and costs of $47,000 to $70,000 for court personnel. In other words, about 1/2 million dollars more to try a death penalty case.
On direct appeal, the cost of appellate defense averages $100,000 more in death penalty cases, than in non-death penalty murder cases.
Personal restraint petitions filed in death penalty cases on average cost an additional$137,000 in public defense costs.
(Report to Washington State Bar Association)
On average, after trial, appeals etc. a death penalty case is about 2 million dollars more expensive than the same case seeking life without parol.
http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/article.php?did=108
On average, it costs about 32,000 dollars to keep a prisoner in prison for a year.
At $32,000, it would take about 62 years of imprisonment before the cost would equal the cost of a death penalty matter.
The average age of the habitual criminal is 29, with a life expectancy in jail of 69, meaning an average prison stay of 40 years for criminals convicted of life.
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9D0DE3D91139F930A25756C0A962958260
This means that a life without parol sentence is about $700,000 (22 years X $32,000 per year) cheaper than a death sentence.
Both life in prison without parol and death have the same benefit to society, the murderer is out of circulation.

so, in effect, win/win. i agree, totally. but even if it cost more, i would still be against the state having the right to murder people.

To my mind, the death penalty is the price assigned by society for the commission of certain crimes.
Similar to if you walk into a China shop, break one of the plates on display and the proprietor says, "You break it, you bought it."
--- I am wracked with such hearty guffaws that in addition to rolling to and fro on the floor, my posterior has separated itself from my body.

Yeah, but I personally, from a fiscal standpoint, would rather pay the cheaper price to achieve the same goal. Why pay more if you don't have to?

I think going to jail for life under miserable conditions for killing someone is pretty much the same as "you break it, you bought it."

I didn't use that term. Nice try.
