How come they're not looting in Iowa?
I mean, hasn't the precedence been set that when flooded, looting shall prevail as the survival tool of the day. Hell, I wish it' flood around here cause I need some ****. My DVD player is broke, my tennis shoes are old and discolored, my TV is analog and weighs about 1000lbs. I could really use one of those fancy flat screen 72" TVs, I tell ya. All though, I have to admit that I'm not sure if I can get all of the **** I wan.......need, around here.
So, what's wrong with the Iowans? Don't they understand the importance of tradition?

I think they have deployed the national guard and Marines in the area...

I don't know. I just watched a bunch of videos from AP, Reuters, CBS and ABC but they made no mention of it. Although, I can't imagine them not deploying them.

i haven't seen any videos of the areas affected, but to compare any part of iowa, primarily suburban and farming communities, to any urban area, and to compare the devastation of any certain part of iowa to the total submerging of huge areas of new orleans after Hurricane Katrina came through and the levees broke, is not a very valid comparison....I wouldn't think.

Check out the vids, Jim. It's not a suburban area, it's Cedar Rapids and De Moines and a levee did break. Video looks very reminiscent to New Orleans.

the flooding is a problem, especially when public facilities are threatened - like water supply plants.
still, the impact is generally limited to confined areas (a few blocks) near the rising river levels.
the 100 blocks affected in downtown cedar rapids, ia is unusual and probably the worst case in iowa by far. nothing like this has ever happened to cedar rapids.
also, the mississippi river crest is not breaking records (only #5 on the chart) - the mississippi causes bigger problems. the iowa and cedar river are setting records 5'-10' above 1993 levels, but only a few towns are affected.
the national guard are mainly helping fill sandbags, directing traffic, and to a lesser extent deterring sightseeing and gawkers.
--- people say i'm apathetic, but i don't care.

there weren't any sightseers in freaking new orleans...it was completely devastated. anybody that somehow compares the two isn't really looking at reality....New Orleans was already pretty much below sea level BEFORE the hurricane came ashore and all the levees broke....2 people have died in Des Moines...there were hundreds, maybe thousands killed in New Orleans and they had about a 3 day warning it was coming....

from what i remember, the reports of all the looting was greatly overstated...some people did break into stores for food and water, but jesus christ, it was pretty much an emergency situation, food and water wise...the inherent racism by some of the people on this board is amazing...

Jim just can't bring himself to admit that thuggery ruled the day and the downtrodden pieces of carp who resided in New Orleans simply took advantage. I laugh every time someone trotts out that nonsense about survival. Since when does survival include new shoes, DVD players and television set? Especially in an area currently flooded and without electricity to make the DVD players a TVs work.
