Nah, racism isn't rampant in America.

well Steve...let me say this.
Obama's campaign did a service for America, by exposing the underbelly of racism that has thus far lied right below the surface.
we're not talking about "kill the ****s" racism...we knew about them. we're talking about that subtle racism. it's not an overt thing...many people who are unfortunate victims of subtle racism don't even know it.
things like equating Black nationalist thought to KKKesque White separatist thought...there is a huge difference. and if we as a nation understood our history and the reasons why there would ever be such a thing as Black nationalism, perhaps things like Trinity Church would not be so shocking and unacceptable.
if folks understood how racism works, how institutionalized oppression works, and how it's possible to still feel its effects, although we are far removed from the days of slavery and Jim Crow, perhaps they wouldn't say "my family didn't own slaves so racism is over." it's not that simple. and believe me, I'm not saying it now to make "excuses"...I'm just saying what happened, why we find ourselves in the situation we do today, where Blacks and Whites could live in the same country, yet totally misunderstand each other.
I really hope that President Obama helps to heal the nation from the festering wounds that haven't properly healed for so many centuries.

well, i must admit i don't understand how Trinity Church's racist tendencies are any more acceptable than some podunk church in Mississippi might be just because it calls itself a white church and says that it places Europe first. no, i think maybe you are the one who has trouble seeing racism when it comes from a black source....

Good post, Joy!
I agree. Racism is real.
But let's not forget that blacks can be racist too..it's not just whites who are the culprits. It's pervasive in all cultures, all sexes, all ages.
Obama is going to be a good thing for America...it may be rough adjusting but change is good.

actually I have no problem identifying racism when it comes from Blacks. in fact, I often correct those who call it "reverse racism"...there is no such thing. racism is racism no matter who speaks it or acts on it.
Trinity Church is about Black nationalism, which is about recognizing the fact that there have been institutions designed to oppress and disenfranchise the pan-African diaspora, and seeks to cure the diaspora of that cancer.
it's not about separating the Black race from the White race, or killing whitey...it's about stopping the poisonous, vicious cycle that has destroyed families and communities.
this is a far, far cry from "the aryan race is superior" and "lynch the darkies".
the problem is most folks have no idea what I'm talking about.

yeah, i know i don't. it sounds racist to me, just not in a hateful or destructive way. They also espouse, if i am not mistaken, a policy of hiring black people first..isn't that in itself racist? I don't really care if you try to excuse it by saying 400 years ago some people screwed over slaves or whatever....half of the people in that church have about as much real connection to Africa and to slavery as I do to Europe and to being a slave owner..in short, not one bit. geez, it is ridiculous to pretend that some guy born in Detroit in 1950 is still having to pledge allegiance to Africa in order to somehow get through life here in this country...ridiculous and a full load of bull****.

I wonder if, Jim, you are able to put aside your need to be right, so that you can be informed in terms of the specifics of Black nationalism and how it rose after slavery, since these institutions were created specifically because Black people could no longer be controlled through slavery.
are you?
