High gas prices here to stay?

Assuming we'll never see gas prices drop below $3.50 -$4.00/gallon from this point on, what would the short-, medium-, and long-term effects be on the economy and in society in general?

For instance, I predict a sharp decline in suburban development in the near future, and a concurrent rise in interest in mass transit and other alternative forms of transportation leading to changes in the way people choose homes, jobs, form their travel habits, etc.

Since I live in-town closer to public transport, yay for increases in my property values!

well, short term- it means goodbye to relatively cheap food, too. relatively cheap airfare. everything is going to be higher, the middle class and the working poor will be squeezed even more, and the rich will have even more opportunities to use their huge advantage in capital to pick up property at reduced value. but, overall, long term - who knows? it might make us all use less oil, develop an alternative fuel much faster, end our dependence on foreign oil faster, make our air and our water safer, and have a long term positive affect on our country and the world.

I read a Thomas Friedmann editorial a while back that said we should voluntarily stick to $4 a gallon, because already things like people taking public transportation have increased, and it has lead to more of a demand for alternative energy. He basically said it was a wake-up call for us, that we say we are dependent on oil, but it's not until we are really hit by high prices that we BELIEVE it and do something about it. I'll see if I can find it.

The benefit of high gas prices

It's just an excerpt, I'm still looking for the entire thing, but it's a jumping off point.

I agree Jim that it may very well lead to positive enironmental effects. Of course we may also see some economic shake-ups as traditional auto manufacturing is forced to evolve or die.

Sounds like a good article jess -- exactly along the lines I was thinking.

I read the same article jessilin...I thought it was hogwash, and kind of shocking, considering I loved The World Is Flat.

unless salaries will eventually rise to help defray these costs, it means nothing but worsened quality of life for future generations.

why can't we just be responsible about developing alternate fuels without having to suffer? we get it! gotta develop alternate fuels...now stop making people choose between food and medicine. emoticon

and yes, property values in the cities will stay nice and high, and probably within the near suburbs it'll be ok...property values in the far suburbs will decline though.

Well that's an excellent question joy, but it kind of speaks to the human condition in general, doesn't it? What I mean is, while we can as individuals see the wisdom of that, since movement in our society turns on market demand, we have to kind of wait until market demand reaches a critical mass before we see paradigm shifts in the way things are done.
