On Facebook, you can have both.
A vampire is a vampire, period, all the time, no changing.
A werewolf is a lot like a woman with her period, at regular intervals they all get really pissed off and turn into some hideous creature.

Hmmmm. This is hard. Both creatures have their high and low points.
Vampires don't have to go through painful changes, but sunlight is painful. Like Marci said, in some legends they can go out in sunlight, but even in some of those legends, they usually can't stay in it for an extended period of time - it becomes an itch, and then a burn, and then you fry. Vampires are generally regarded as being sexier, but that depends on if you're an incubus/succubus (sometimes they're vampire-like, and sometimes they're just demons). Vampires generally live much longer than usual (some are even immortal), but that would mean that you would constantly have to move from city to city, so no one gets suspicious of you, since you're not aging (unless you're David Bowie's character John in "The Hunger" - then you're screwed *snort*).
Werewolves obviously go through painful changes during the full moon. However, in some legends, some werewolves are able to control their transformations, so they can change whenever they want to (though usually, they are still compelled to change on the full moon). Some werewolves can even minimize the pain to a faint prickling. A werewolf usually loses most of its humanity after a change, which I don't know if I would like, since I'd like to think for myself and not just go by animal instinct. Though as a werewolf gets older, sometimes they can retain their humanity. So... I don't know. Then there's the fact that you have to be careful around people, or else you'll get found out, and then you'll get hunted. But I do like the animalistic aspect of a werewolf... just not the losing all sense of self bit.
I'd say it's a tossup, since I think both creatures are fascinating and just plain awesome.
...can I be a vampire werewolf? *bats eyelashes*
