I looked up pictures on google, and all the newt pictures looked just like Walter.
Besides, salamanders are slimy like frogs. Walter wasn't slimy

I believe what you've got is a Fire Salamander (by the way Salamanders are in the Newt family but there are distinct differences between the two within the class)...but to end the arguement I have a friend that has a degree/doctorate on Reptiles and amphibians with your permission I'll send Walter's pic to him and get his Official answer.
