I'm a nursing supervisor at a long term care facility. In other words I'm the night shift big cheese at an old folks home. Begrudgingly. My boss left for greener pastures (and a huuuge raise) so I'm here holding the reins for a while until someone even more insane than me takes over.

How did you come to work there Linda?

Image I was a preschool Teacher for twenty years and developed bilateral carpel tunnel and bilateral tendinitis. The preschool put me on light duty and I wasn't making enough to pay my bills. I had to get a lawyer since my workman's comp would take three months to review my claim. I couldn't wait that long for treatment and I couldn't get disability with out a doctor signing my papers. The lawyer took care of everything from surgery to therapy and after everything was said and done then I was also given Vocational Rehabilitation. I was sent to school to become a Medical Assistant. A friend of mine that went through the program with me told me about the opening at her work. I applied and they practically hired me on the spot because their MA had just quit on them and they needed a new one fast! I learned a lot about dermatology on the job because I had done my extern ship with a perinatologist and I was just fresh out of MA school. I love it now but it was really rough when I first started. I would come home in tears every day for the first four months or so!

lol, well the truth is painful, and amusing at times.

I know sorta how you feel about it being hard at first working in the medical field. When I first started working as a CNA I was 19 years old, terribly terribly shy, and here I am cleaning old men's dingies and watching people suffer. It was horrible. My instructor insisted I would not last a month, I cried the second day I was there. It really really hurt me when I watched this man with Huntington's Disease die, he was my friend and I cried mercilessly for weeks afterward. I can remember sobbing on his grave. It was horrible. Now I'm sorta kinda used to it, but it's still hard at times. If it weren't I don't think I'd have a soul. Some people lose their souls here, they lose that passion and heart for the people. And these people need it so desperately. Truly. Sometimes we're all they've got.

It takes a special kind of person to work in the situations we work in. I'm sure you're much appreciated. :)

Image Wow your job is really sad with all the death you have to be around all the time....I guess I didn't really explain the reason I was having such a hard time....You see the doctor I was working with was under a lot of pressure so she would snap at me all the time and since I was so new I didn't know how to do the things she wanted in the way that she needed them to be done or handled. Her PA was out on Maternity leave and so instead of tapering the patient flow down the scheduling office just put them all on my doctors schedule which put her in the worst mood every day! If I was more experienced then I would have been able to thin her schedule down a bit and ease the pressure on her but I had no idea what it was supposed to be like....Now I always look ahead on the schedule and fix all the stupid mistakes the schedulers make all the time even though I've told them how she likes it sooooo many times! emoticon

She sounds like one of the docs that frequent here. When he gets mad he tends to throw whatever is in his way...charts, phones, whatever. One day he started smarting me off and I was like, "Dude I had NO idea the lady was going to be out of the facility, and we're not going to call you to let you know a patient was visiting a family member because then you WOULD be mad." He then apologized. I about crap myself because most of the docs think they're Jesus's son around here. But he's ok. They're all so overworked and the people here are mostly just Medicare and so they're swept under the rug unless they have family members who really will fight for their rights and such. One doc will absolutely NEVER answer my faxes/pages/calls. And I mean SERIOUS stuff too. It's so frustrating.

Image I used to think my doctor was pretty bad but I've heard so many horror stories from other people that make my doctor seem like a pussy cat...LOL! Since I started there a year ago the PA that was out is back and they have hired another Doctor and another PA and added two more MA's...I don't know how I did it by myself for so long...There is always so much to do so I'm so happy that I have all this help now! emoticon emoticon

Yeah understaffing is like a virus in the medical field. It's sad. People who have jobs don't come to them and people who want to work here are turned away. Such a shame.

Hey if you get a chance find a place in Heaven Chat and join the fray. Master Chief's drunk and his posts are always hilarious when he's drunk. It's like he slurs his typing. He's a lovable goober.
