Strikers

Seems that most of our best atrikers over the years - most recently Hunt and Moran - have developed while at the club.Difference now is that all the current crop - besides Sharpy - have been brought in on the basis of form already achieved.

Seen enough already to have seen that Williams, Reed, Roberts and Jiws and Owen are all great talents and offer lots of options.

With the exception of Jiws tho, none of their records with previous clubs suggests that the main part of their game is clinical finishing.

Matty Williams scored 18 goals from 61 appearances for Burton and Tamworth. Jamie Reed managed a respectable 9 out of 20 for Aber. At a much higher level, Neil Roberts scored one goal per 5 games for Wrexham, Doncaster and Wigan throughout his career. Carl Owen had a good 2005/6 season but scored just 15 goals out of 48(+9) appearances for Port last 2 seasons.Sharpy has 7 out of 15 appearances (+ loads of subs).

Compare this to the last strike-pair. Hunt scored 73 league goals from 115 appearances for Rhyl. Leaving out the phenomenal 2003/4 season, Moran scored an almost identical 72 goals from the 117 appearances.

Reed, Williams and Sharp are all young enough to develop. All these strikers have massive contributions to make, but one or two of them will need to develop quickly as prolific finishers if we are to score more rather than less league goals coming season

The standard and attractive nature of the football is going to improve well at BV this season with this talented batch of footballers - hopefully the results will follow

Re: Strikers

Bit unfair to make comparisons with Hunt and Moran on goal scoring records.
Reed and Williams have played most of their football at a higher level than the WPL, Williams in particular. Scoring goals in a struggling conference side is always going to be harder than banging a hatrick against llangefni.

If you want good examples of players who scored loads of goals in the WPL but failed to do so at a higher level, our own Jiws, who's record in the WPL is phenominal and Graham Evans another with a great WPL record. Jiws couldn't cut it at the lower levels of the FL and evans couldn't even get in the side at Conf. Hereford.

First look at Williams last night and he looks sharp, good touch and an intelligent footballer. Reed I've seen before he came to Rhyl but showed to me he could play left side well and I know he's a good striker. With Neil Roberts showing some good touches I think we'll create a lot of chances this season and I'm sure players with lesser scoring records will find the goals a little easier to come by in the WPL

Being a clincal finisher is all about confidence and believing you're really going to do it every time you get into the box - and a bit of ability rofl

Must be difficult for strikers to be efficient if they're in and out of the team - that could be a problem with so many strikers.

Comparison with previous strikers was for the rather obvious reason that, to improve upon last season's 3rd place, we have to
1) Score more goals, and
2) Let in even less.
I'm a bit nervous on both counts altho I'm sure that Craig's right that loads of chances will be created and the football will be much more entertaining. I do accept also that it's stupid to even think about making judgments on the basis of what we've seen so far.............it's just that we've got newtown first up and colwyn bay looked very like a newtown standard to me - created loads of chances, took none then suddenly went dodgy again at the back.

Won't be the first time I'm proved wrong :-D
