Re: Frank Beard from ZZTop
I've always thought the older stuff was great.
But they lost me with "Eliminator".
That's when they went big.
But I call it a sell-out.

Re: Frank Beard from ZZTop
I think he's one of the best kept secrets in drumming. He doesn't get near the recognition he deserves. I think he's great.

Re: Frank Beard from ZZTop
I concur.
Plus, his name is "Beard" and he's the only member of the trio that's beardless. This is an important fact...
...I think...

Re: Frank Beard from ZZTop
I heard about the back up guitarist for ZZ at a local concert was playing behind a speaker columm, Im a big ZZ top fan, but thought that was a lame thing to do. Their name was American Blues when they started and did release 1 Lp. I play some of their stuff too. I actually like the Eliminator Lp. Some fav are: Beer drinkers, Jesus just left Chicago, Tush, La Grande, Sharp dressed man. Fun music.

Re: Frank Beard from ZZTop
Frank Beard is one of my favorites. The early albums are great, but I still enjoy all the later stuff too, the tunes on Eliminator are great.
That's a Lynn drum machine on Eliminator, and later albums too, until the computerized stuff came along.
Frank did not want to go that way, he wanted live drums in the studio - but Billy Gibbons said Frank could leave the band if he wasn't happy about it. So he stayed, and toured with the band and made millions, but on most of the records from Eliminator-on the drums are more or less mechanical. Too bad. I also believe Frank's unhappiness with the situation over the years contributed in part to his personal problems.
I've seen ZZ Top live 3 times and they were terrific every time. Frank is a great player and the kit always sounds good.
And Billy Gibbons is one of the most seriously under-rated blues players there is...
