How to Tell an XP8 From a Big R 5 Ply from a Distance

Here's something I just discovered through a hunch and some detective work.

In looking through the Big R catalogs, the 5 ply Big R drums have the Big R badge (and thus the vent) placed either to the left or right of the Memriloc mount. The XP8 drums have the badges/vents placed opposite the Memriloc mount. The effect is that the XP8 badges face away from the audience while the 5 ply Big R will either face toward or away, depending upon whether a drum is positioned left or right.

In my opinion, the change was an aesthetic improvement, as this gives the drums a more pleasing and understated appearance.

We can also tell a 5 ply from an XP8 by the appearance of reinforcement rings in the 5 ply, and no rerings on the XP8s. However, many of our eBay auctioneer pals are illiterate when it comes to drums, emoticon so it can sometimes be difficult to tell what's what from poorly posted pictures. Now we can identify XP8s/5 plies by the positioning of the badge.

Hope this information helps with the dating guide...

I'm the proud owner of a tobacco burst Big R 5 ply kit. I just checked my hanging toms. As you stand in front of the drum set, the 12 inch tom has the Big R badge to the right of the mount, visible to the audience. The 13 tom does as well, but when mounted it is next to the 12 inch tom on the side and not visible to the audience.

Mschnake, I didn't know you had a tobacco sunburst kit! Where you been hiding it? When do we get to see some pics?

Regarding the badge placement, I talked to Bobby Chiasson a few months ago and it had been his belief that Rogers was haphazard in this Big R placement, i.e., they'd build a bunch of drums to the left, and a bunch to the right. It probably was their intent to match an L and R drum together for a kit going out the door, but these things can change, of course, as an owner adds pieces to a kit.

Anyway, I think my hunch about the XP8s moving the vent and badge opposite the mount is valid. I'm going to bounce it off of Bobby when I next speak with him.

So when do we get to see the pics???????

Shoot, Mschnake, I remember your kit now! Darn, what a lousy memory. That thread started back in September and went for a month. We discussed the rerings then.

I think we've learned a lot about the 5 ply and XP8 Big Rs since then.

By the way, nice drums. And I'm not partial to tobacco sunburst or anything... emoticon emoticon

some of the guys on here actually think the red sparkle or blue sparkle drums are louder than tobacco sunburst. Should we tell them the truth or leave them in their delusional state?

Blinded by the light
script badge in their eyes
you know, they're wound a little tight

Blinded by the light
red glitter in their eyes,
another drummer isn't right

They got down, but they never got it right
They won't make it, through the night

(apologies to Manfred Mann)
