Help with Dating Rogers "Big R" XP-8 Drum Set

Dear Rogers Colleagues, I'm trying to detremine when the set descibed below was made. It was bought all at one time and I believe it was made around 1980 - 83, but I'm not sure. The set is a Tobacco Sunburst Lacquer finish with 8-ply maple (Keller shells?), staggered seams, clear varnish interiors, beavertail lugs and a 45 degree bearing edge. The "Big R" decals do have "U.S.A." on them; the Dynasonic snare has green felt gaskets/washers between the lugs and shell. I have checked Rob Cook's "The Rogers Book" & and the online Rogers Dating website list with no firm conclusion. I've read here that the decals serial# badges were known to be reordered, starting the numbering over again without regard to sequential integrity. Perhaps 1980-83 is going to be the best estimate, but if anyone can assist, I would be most grateful. Thank you!

Dynasonic 5x14 Snare Drum = D106404
9x13 Mounted Tom = D100550
10x14 Mounted Tom = D109429
16x16 Floor Tom = D107658
14x22 Bass Drum = D104395

P.S. This is the set I'm refurbishing and the suggestions from David & Jack have been most helpful. Thanks, Guys!

I don't know how this post was missed but let's see if we can help John find the answers.

We know that it's an XP8 set which is the hardest to date. So if anyone, perhaps TommyKat, has any info let's see what we can do.

Sorry John

Jack, no problem. Appreciate any help that can be given. I figured this would be a tough one. Like I said, maybe the best we'll come up with is 1980-83. Perhaps, someone has a serial# close to one of mine and knows the date of their set. This may be inaccurate due to the re-use of serial# decals, but what the heck. Thanks to all!

John, great kit! I too have an XP8 tobacco sunburst that I bought new in 1980. I have no serial numbers.

The green felt makes this an 82 or 83, as best anyone knows. Ploughman has black felts, and he thinks that one of these colors is earlier than the other. He is checking on that.

Does your Dyna have the brass thumbwheel lug locks? Is it a COB Dyna, or wood finish?

Tommykat1, I believe my Dyna is COB. It's definately not wood. To be truthful, how can I tell Chrome over Brass, if entire drum is finished in chrome? Also, it does have brass thumbwheel lug locks. Thanks for the help!

Use a magnet on the shell, if it's brass it won't stick.

Johnp51, the thumbwheel luglocks might be the key to everything here.

I assume that the badges say "Made in USA" as that would be in keeping with the XP8 era.

We've determined that the luglocks were added to the Dyna series when the wood Dynas were reintroduced in 1982. They were made only in 1982 and 1983, because in 1984 production halted and the CBS exec in charge, William Schultz, allegedly began raiding the company of funds, put a for sale sign on the door, sucked the company dry, laid off the employees, auctioned off the remaining inventory and parts, and sold the company name to...himself!

So, pending the outcome of Ploughman's inquiry regarding when the black felts were used as opposed to the green felts, we'll know which year your set was made.

Remember, Ploughman has two wood Dynas with black felts and luglocks. I have a wood Dyna with green felts and luglocks. The Rogers book shows these and the COB model you have with luglocks to have been produced in 1983. But there is a catalog dated 1982 that also shows the luglocks. So, a slight disparity here...

Suffice to say that you have one of the last and best Rogers kits ever produced.

Hi,

I don't have any 10-ply Maple Dynasonic snare drums from that era. I have a 1980 COB Dynasonic that has no serial number on the Big R badge. I know it's from that time, it has the throw and muffler knobs that you can see the shaft and the finish on the knobs isn't smooth.

I think you have me confused with The Ploughman, he has 10-ply Maple Dynasonic's from that era.

I think the black felts were first in 1982, then the green ones 1983+

Roger that, good buddy, you ain't the Ploughman and the Ploughman ain't Longroll. Got you two confused momentarily due to a bad case of sometimers disease. Apologies!

Anyway, Bruce, thanks for providing the missing data. Black felts 1982, green felts 1983. Luglocks both years.

John, it appears that your drums are from 1983, and you have one of the very last sets of American made Rogers XP8 old growth New England Rock Maple 8 ply drums in existence. Hold on to 'em, as they should increase in value exponentially, as not too many of the XP8 models were made (1979 - 1983) while Rogers was losing market share to the influx of Japanese kits during the U. S. recession at the time. Not only is the tobacco sunburst, in my humble opinion, the finest finish, but the XP8s are arguably the best quality and best sounding shells Rogers ever made.
