Rogers Timbales -- Mounting Problem
I picked up some Big R timbales on a whim, at a pretty decent price. They came loose, ie, no stand. I had assumed--wrongly--that the usual Memriloc mounts would be used. However, what I found were kind of a slip-on flat hook arrangement. Sure enough, in deciphering the Timbales offerings in some of the Big R catalogs, there appears to be a special (read unobtanium) quick-attach slide-on mount with a cowbell rod.
I called around, and this appears to be a tough part to find. Al Drew Music says to give it a year!
Here's my question: How badly do you think it would hurt the sound if I drilled the timbales out and fit Memriloc mounts to them? I have the pieces: receivers (like what is inserted into a bass drum or tom), dual mount arms and a stand.
Also, there is the worry of affecting the value here. I didn't pay a lot for these, and I don't really know whether they will escalate in value much like drum sets.
Any opinions?

Re: Rogers Timbales -- Mounting Problem
Being timbales, I assume they are metal?
By drilling out new holes,I think it would be possible you could introduce some unwanted rattle.
As for the re-sale value, I have a similar dilemma. I purchased a 1972 4 piece kit + Super Ten back in 1991. Since I liked the Memri-Loc hardware so much, the first thing I did with was remove the Swiv-O-Matic hardware from the rack toms and bass, and replace it with M/L. (I would never do this now, but in 1991, I didn't consider these drums to be collector's items).
So I assume I have pretty much destroyed the re-sale value of this kit (except for the pristine 16" floor tom).
Even if I were to re-Swivo them, having had to drill a larger tom-arm hole would make their value quite low as a vintage kit.
So my assesment (from experience) would be that adding M/L holes to these timbales (which I think are quite rare??) would greatly reduce their value as vintage drums.
But, I am new to this arena, so I could be quite mistaken.

Re: Rogers Timbales -- Mounting Problem
Hey Tommy, I believe Ludwig still makes that timbale stand and I believe that it will fit the Rogers timbales. Don't drill them and use a different mount. Pretty good chance you'll kill the sound if you do. You might also try Latin Percussion or some of the other brands.

Re: Rogers Timbales -- Mounting Problem
Thanks, guys. I was all set to drill away. Do you think the timbales will ever be worth anything?

Re: Rogers Timbales -- Mounting Problem
Well, I was hoping for a set one day....
What are the shell sizes again? 13" and 14"?
Larger?
I'm hoping to spend $$$ on some Big R drums soon, so I can't afford them now anyway.

Re: Rogers Timbales -- Mounting Problem
If nothing else they'll be worth a lot of fun times playing them. Timbales come awfully close to drum set for fun to play. I've had more kicks playing latin music over the years and it's very challenging too.

I know zero about it, but I've always loved the sound. Don't know what the heck "milo" is. I hope You Tube has something to say..

Re: Rogers Timbales -- Mounting Problem
Once again, I'm not afraid to show my naivety and ignorance.
And if anybody has an extra "Memriloc Ratchet", I'll take it. Name your price. After all we gotta keep these Rogers prices up there!

Re: Rogers Timbales -- Mounting Problem
I have a bunch of memriloc parts. What exactly do you need? I don't think I have just the ratchet but do have some arms with ratchet. Let me know and I'll take a look. Supposed to warm up to the 40's Friday.
