Beavertail infro needed

Was there a difference in the hole location or diameter on the Cleveland, Dayton, or Fullerton beavertails? I mean could you swap them and not know the difference? I know the ealier ones had springs. Im just concered with the holes. Thanx in advance

There are slight casting differences. The 63/64 early beavertails used a slightly larger screw than the second issue. The reason for the change was that the screw post often broke off.

But basically they are all the same. You can take a spring and insert and pop it into a springless lug casing and it all fits.

I'm a little confused...
Which is correct for the XP8-spring or springless?
I'm using both on my cali wine kit,but whichis the right one?
Does the spring really rattle as some claim?
If so,can it be remedied?

Hi Roger,
If you experience rattles, you can stuff the cavity with cotton balls or wrap felt around the spring.
I use the square cotton felt pads my wife buys for removing makeup. A pack of 100 costs like $2.00!

From approx 1975-on the springless units were used. So, any XP8 kits would have the springless.

A beavertail lug from any era will fit any beavertail drum. As mentioned, the very first beavertails used a larger screw that caused problems with the screw-boss breaking off, but this was quickly corrected and those lugs are pretty scarce. They would still swap to any other drum, however...

I have never encountered a problem with the springs buzzing in a lug. The beavertails in use until the late 60's all had a felt pad inside to cushion the spring, but even after the felt was eliminated it wasn't a real problem. Any lugs with springs that do buzz can be stuffed with cotton.

Obviously, this is not an issue with the springless lugs...

Thanks!
I have a mix of both spring and springless on my cali wine. but it is not noticable. I can't hear a rattle.
But it good to know a simple fix is all that is needed. emoticon
