1960s R-360
Please forgive me if there is already a thread for this somewhere, I haven't been able to find it. I may be able to get a 5 piece rogers r-360 first generation for a couple hundred bucks. Can somebody tell me a little bit about this model? From what I gather it's a student model or middle of the line kind of thing. Any info is appreciated!

Hi basslineage, and welcome!
the R360 is worth no more than that, and you can find used modern outfits for that price. If you're patient, you may find a real US made Rogers outfit that'll fit your budget and appreciate in value. Oh, and it'll sound a lot nicer too! The R360 isn't really considered to be a vintage Rogers. Only the American made drums seem to be appreciating in value.

And having said that (and it's all correct) the first generation R360's aren't too bad a drumset. They sound as good as any entry level drum of today and better than most. They won't be collectable but if you're looking for a players set they ain't bad for a couple hundred.

Re: 1960s R-360
Ah I see. So not all models of Rogers were made in America in the late 1960s? Where were they made? Are they made of composite partical board or were they still maple or poplar? Appreciate the info!

Re: 1960s R-360
In order to try to compete with the flood of cheap imports in the 60's Rogers farmed out to Yamaha for the early R360 and R380 drumsets in 1968. The early ones (series 1) were made with select Asian hardwoods and the later versions (series 2) were 9 ply mahogany.

Re: 1960s R-360
So I got the drums, set them up with vintage coated weatherkings, and an Aquarian superkick II head, and WOW! This is one great sounding drum set, especially for the price. I am an audio engineer and I find them very versatile sounding. Potentially great for rock and even jazz. I don't know much of the story behind the drums but they are basically in near mint condition. Sounds just like 1967 When I first got the drums, the shells felt particularly heavy, possibly "select asian hardwoods" as mentioned by musicbybj. I work at a state of the art recording studio in NY, so I'll be sure to record the drums and post the audio up here

I'm glad you like them and would love to hear them. It's the Island Imports that are total junk. This board has been helpful to many people buying vintage drums.

Re: 1960s R-360
Aye that! I have a imp set w/ NO clue what to do with 'em.
Now that the cali wine XP8's are up and drumming,I'll never go back to the imps.
Although they sounded ok for a few bar gigs.
All I could think about was "MAN,I cant wait to get the XP8's"
Thanks to everyone for the encouragement!
