Anybody heard the name Josh Rogers?
Over on the English Rogers section Swivomatic has had a conversation with Eddie Ryan, noted drum builder, who used to work for Ajax in the early 60s, and built English Rogers drums. He recalls that an employee of Rogers, Josh Rogers, was sent to the UK to research where Rogers drums should be made under licence in the UK, and he returned to the UK on odd occasions.
Has anybody heard of Josh Rogers? Was he a member of the family? What was his position in the company?
Have to assume he was pretty high up as he appears to have worked with some autonomy. Any info gratefully received.
Thanks
Alan

Re: Anybody heard the name Josh Rogers?
As far as I know...The name "Rogers" ended with Cleveland Rogers, son of Joseph H Rogers Jr. in New Jersey. When Cleveland died May 17th 1952 the company was sold, around or before to Henry Grossman of Grossman Music. Mr. Grossman started up his drum production with Joe Thompson in Covington OH early 1950s. I am not aware of anyone from the NJ drum company/family name to go over to OH. Please keep us posted on this. Ya got me!

Gary, really helpful, thanks. May be just a coincidence then.
Cheers

Re: Anybody heard the name Josh Rogers?
I agree with Gary on this.
Perhaps the usage: 'Josh from Rogers' morphed into 'Josh Rogers' over a period of time.
Or else, there was such a person, and in a huge coincidence had the same last name as the company he worked for.
Speaking of coincidences, how about Cleveland Rogers having a first name that reflected the name of the city his company would be moved to from Farmingdale NJ.
By the way, I lived 10 minutes from Farmingdale for 22 years, and less than 30 minutes away for the 8 years before that. I always loved Rogers, got my first set at 18 in 1968 when I lived in NYC. I had no idea of the Farmingdale connection until I first saw the Rogers Book about 8 years ago...
Here is some info from John Aldridge's wonderful Guide To Vintage Drums, another great resource:

Re: Anybody heard the name Josh Rogers?
Thanks Dan, I did wonder whether Josh had become synonymous with the company he worked for and became Josh Rogers. Quite likely. Thanks for the exert too.

Re: Anybody heard the name Josh Rogers?
In the book exerpt: Aren't the dates of the eagle badges and script logos wrong? 54/55 eagle and depending on which script 59-61. I'd like to know if there is a way to look further on the date of a Company sold. I mean it was a family name transfered to a non family member. Or could of been just a handshake in 1952. Different vintage books have different years but it was around 1952/3. Would like to start solidifying(word?) things like that for clarity sake. Spare time projects...Peace, Gary

Re: Anybody heard the name Josh Rogers?
Phil, this did cross my mind. Josh in the UK would normally be short for Joshua. I'm sure that must be the same in the US?
In Rob Cooks list of Covington era employees in the Rogers book there are no Joshua's but two Joes, Joe Whitenack who was second plant manager, and of course Joe Thompson who was chief engineer. It would make sense to send your chief engineer to visit other drum companies. He would have the experience and really be the obvious candidate to chose a drum company who was up to the job. There would be many technical issues to be discussed regarding shells and lugs and heads etc etc.
English Rogers started in production mid 1961. So "Josh Rogers'" visit must have taken place at least 1960 and possibly 1959. Rob Cook says that in 1955 Rogers employed 12 people and by 1965 they employed 60 people. There was not a lot of people choose from, and "Josh" had to be high up in the company. When you think about it, if you were Henry Grossman who would you send? The choice is obvious I think. It had to be Joe Thompson.

Re: Anybody heard the name Josh Rogers?
Nutbox, Not sure about the name thing but...pg18 Rogers Book (2nd edition) Henry Grossman made reference in Joe Thompsons Eulogy 1968 to "One year ago in Europe Joe met a manufacturer, a total stranger, who had production difficulties. Joe not only improved his product but doubled production."
Not linked directly to the English Rogers drum manufacture but does give us a clue to Joe traveling out of Covington, which he loved so much.
Keep digging on this English Rogers history Alan...things tend to get clearer over time asking around to anyone who will listen. Glad you are on the case!
Peace, Gary
